youngindia Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 (edited) In the 2017 champions trophy, i had long identified the lack of depth after the top 3 as a soft underbelly. Its really unfortunate to lose to Pak in 2017 and Nz TODAY...Both were inferior opponents that shud have been defeated on the day. but our weaknesses were there to be exploited in the first place. The 4-6 could do a steady a job but not an exceptional job. It took long struggling Jadeja to give surreal hopes today. If Rahul, Manish , Mayank, Samson, iyer had developed a season or two faster, it would have increased our chances manifold..what we missed was someone from the 2010 or 2012 team standing up like Jadeja did today. Pant and Pandya were too young to play the long knock..they unfortunately did what i precisely feared...an ungainly high risk shot If today's pitch had been a road, they may have played the innings of their life...but a slow pitch demanded maturity in strategy...Something they didn't have What was missing was a Mayank or Chand who had played 50 or so matches. This is on BCCI and the state associations, Karthik was totally wasted. I mentioned previously he was strictly a cameo player for the last 10 overs. he was sent up to be wasted because Dhoni was unreliable against quality swing. The team management was struggling with choices without a doubt. But they took a chance with Vijay Shankar and Rahul who have not played enough ODI's. Rahul partially repaid the faith but he has to do way better than current. Other peers of his have proven worse! The over 30 seniors didn't repay the faith either due to old age or limitations.but that's a situation that would not have come if the younger players from u19 teams had developed on time. The priority for the BCCI and associations have to work with the struggling players to ensure they develop faster. I don't expect depth to be a problem for the next world cup..but it always helps if prospects develop faster. Also Bumrah needs assistance as well. I must say Dhoni's unlucky run out killed it. It took a lot of bad decisions , good play by opposition and bad luck to lose to NZ. That's the pity Edited July 10, 2019 by youngindia edt
