BCCI's new Super eight contract?

KOLKATA, Feb 21: The multi-millionaires of Indian cricket, in a manner of speaking, will be going to the World Cup as paupers. And that is because these players, arguably the highest-paid in this sport, are in conflict with the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) over the contentious issue of contracts. The central contracts, which expired on September 30 last year, are yet to be renewed and despite several rounds of 'talks'--including Monday's Mumbai conclave--between BCCI officials and senior players, no agreement has been reached. Consequently, let alone getting paid, even the playing fees has not been decided upon. According to TOI's sources, the BCCI officials on Monday offered central contracts to only eight players who are 'regulars' in both forms of the game. For the rest, the BCCI proposed a flat playing fee of Rs 2 lakh per match and huge performance bonuses if the team wins a series or tournament. Among those who are going to be offered contracts are skipper Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, MS Dhoni, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh. The big names missing from this list are Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Irfan Pathan. For Sehwag, who is not only struggling for form, but has also fallen foul with the team management, the World Cup therefore presents a final chance to resurrect his floundering career. Laxman, who was handed over the vice-captaincy in the recent Test series in South Africa, misses out because he is no longer a part of the ODI squad. For Pathan, the latest setback is merely a reflection of his fall from grace in recent times. The players, 'hurt' by the BCCI offer, have offered to come back to the negotiating table after the World Cup. The BCCI's latest offer did not go down well with the players because the 'logo money' has been taken out of the equation as reflected in the reduced match fees. Till last season, contracted players in the playing XI used to get Rs 2.5 lakh per Test match and Rs 1.6 lakh per ODI, including the logo money. For the non-contracted players the fees was Rs 3.2 lakh (Tests) and Rs 2.2 lakh (ODIs). The players are obviously hoping that a good show in the World Cup would prompt the BCCI to soften its stand on payments. However, according to TOI sources, the BCCI is committed to restructuring the pay structure in a bid to make it more performance oriented. It wants to do away with the earlier system, under which 26 per cent of the BCCI's gross revenue used to go to the players with the international players creaming off 13 per cent, players in domestic cricket sharing another 10.6 per cent, while the remaining 2.4 per cent used to go to junior cricketers. ?The players should not be concerned with what the BCCI earns. They should only concentrate on winning matches for India and worry about their own form. If the team does well, they stand to earn more than what they used to in the previous scheme,? a Board member told TOI.

Re: BCCI's new Super eight contract? Makes sense to me.....its a professional sport afterall. If a player doesent perform he should be feeling the heat financially too.No one wants overpaid demi gods who perform once in a blue moon. BTW...what about the overpaid BCCI babus? They need to be put in place too..

Re: BCCI's new Super eight contract?

Hopefully this will light a fire under our players.
Or this might even extinguish the fire!! Why on earth should the players be not concerned about what the board earns? Why should the board members look to gobble up the whole money themselves, without putting in any work, any structure whatsoever? Afterall it is players because of of whom we watch the matches and the board earns the money. In fact it is players who earn the money and they must get a share!
