AHMEDABAD: A class XI girl who used an emergency contraceptive pill and believed that this had taken care of any unwanted pregnancy, recently delivered a three-kg baby boy in the toilet bowl! Apparently, she had no clue that she was pregnant because she was very plump. Doctors at VS Hospital here were shocked when the girl, who was admitted in the hospital two weeks ago, told them that she never realised she was pregnant! She told the doctors she had popped an emergency contraceptive pill within three days of having unprotected sex with a boy she had a fling with! "It is possible that she took the pill later than advised. It may also be that she indulged in sex later thinking the protection was for a prolonged period," said attending gynaecologist Dr Rajal Thaker. Doctors have failed to trace the girl after the first visit and had suspected that she and her family might try to dispose of the unwanted baby boy, who looked fine during the brief stay in the hospital. Dr Thaker, who regularly takes sex education lectures in Gujarat, concedes that this case lays strong emphasis on the urgent need for re-introducing compulsory sex education in schools, which was recently scrapped by the Gujarat government following protests from certain sections. "The case also shows the complete breakdown in communication in nuclear families where parents do not even notice for nine months that their daughter is pregnant," says Dr Thaker. Dr Supriya Dalal, another gynaecologist, says she gets at least two-three such cases every year where the teenaged girls are five to six months pregnant with neither the girl nor her parents having any inkling about it! In fact, gynaecologists have expressed concern over growing number of young girls deriving false assurance by using these pills after having unprotected sex.

this just reinforced the need for better sex education in high schools in india, greater availablily to cheap and over the counter contraceptives. its an absolute must! indian men for some strange reason are petrified when purchasing condoms. i still remember the last time i was there in india in 2003, the most trusted salesman of condoms was our local "panwalla"!

how much does a pregnancy test cost in india? at my university's health clinic, they administer one for about 15 bucks a pop, but you could probably buy one in a grocery store for about the same price or maybe a bit less. nonetheless, the situation is quite dire here in the united states. the cost of birth control has risen by 400% in the last two years! i have a friend who campaigns with VOX (voices for planned parenthood) against this hike in BC.

actually not quite... while administering the overnight pill, the effectiveness of which drops exponentially over the first 72 hours to virtually infective thereafter, one is always advised to practice a more readily available form of BC. either take the monthly BC pills (which in some cases seem to help women with irregular periods achieve a regularity, and purpotedly help counter hormonal descripencies), or use the good ole condom. personally the later is a lot lot easier and responsible. not to forget much cheaper. last time i checked the over night pill is about 80-90 bucks a pop whereas for that is more than i spend on a whole year supply of rubbers.

still expensive... in england BC is free. condoms are infinitely cheaper. heck, if you arent using them, they double as party balloons and come handy during holy as peculiar looking water balloons.
