DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Monday welcomed the idea of projecting Rahul Gandhi as the UPA's Prime Ministerial candidate in next year's Lok Sabha polls. CHENNAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Monday welcomed the idea of projecting Rahul Gandhi as the UPA's Prime Ministerial candidate in next year's Lok Sabha polls. "I will be happy if he is made the Prime Ministerial candidate," he told reporters in reply to a question. On including the creamy layer of OBC in 27 per cent reservation in institutions of higher learning, Karunanidhi said he had taken up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh. DMK's action committee, one of the party's policy making bodies, would meet here on April 18 to finalise the party's stand on the issue, he said. After the meeting, the party would be presenting its views to the Centre on the matter, he said. DMK has already demanded that the Centre take immediate measures for a fair and just review of various 'parameters' including the income limit for defining the OBCs in the light of the Supreme Court judgment so that a solution to the issue could be reached and the benefits extended in the coming academic year itself link

Like who? :(( The reason why Rahul Gandhi is a candidate to PM position is as much due to the fact that Congress is overrun by Pschycophants as it is due to the reason that not many leaders in India today have National appeal. A Karnataka leader will struggle to save his deposit in Bengal, Maharastra's Hindu Hridaya Samrat will get his a$$ handed out to him in Bihar. Gandhi name works because of its National appeal. I definitely hold Indians responsible not to get over this state/region/language/caste/religion divide even after 60 years?

Its not so much a product of regionalism/sectarianism but the fact that India lacks genuine leaders and leaders since Independence days are very very mediocre. Indians can transcend regionalism IF there are candidates worthy of it....do you honestly see a Bal Gangadhar Tilak or Jawaharlal Nehru or Subhash Chandra Bose struggling to make an impact outside their ethnic zones ? It is hypothetical,true,but i'd wager that leaders of their stature would make short work of any opposition in India today....but where are the leaders of their stature ??

Indians can transcend regionalism IF there are candidates worthy of it....do you honestly see a Bal Gangadhar Tilak or Jawaharlal Nehru or Subhash Chandra Bose struggling to make an impact outside their ethnic zones ? Yes I do CC. 1) In today's world the chances of becoming a leader is slimmer by the day. Sometime back when Amitabh Bacchan was asked how he would have fared today, he said he would have flopped. His reason was the over-exposure. In his heyday, say 70s, people waited for months to watch his movie, listened to the song off the radio of the film, the traffic stopped when he was interviewed on radio/tv. Today there is no such thing. Why? Its because of this whole Information Democracy where the difference between the leaders and followers have come down drastically. So if 100 years back Gandhi said something people would listen, and would beleive it with shut eye. Today if any leader says anything people start digging up the Internet. That beleif, trust, faith is all but gone and partially it is due to the access to Information that people have. 2) If it is not dependent on the leaders in current scenario then it depends more on the people. Today's world is getting smaller by the second still also getting ghettosized. No matter what Jyoti Basu says he would be loathed first by RSS followers and then his points looked at. People are getting more cynical by the day and less willing to give "benefit of the doubt". And this is about educated folks, we can only imagine about uneducated peeps. xxx

I suggest Rahul gandhi fight an election in his home-stae of UP from anywhere other than amethi/raibareli and see how he fares....My prediction: he will come distant fourth.. Difference in high-command ( who can;t understand any of indian langauges) running the show and some of soil running the show can be gauged from the following fact.. Sonia Gandhi got herself elected from bellari the safest seat in karnataka even there her victory margin against Sushma swaraj who was merely 50000 votes.. Despite losing the election Swaraj kept cultivating relationship with bellari.. so much so she learnt kannad and in latest election was found chiming her words in the local language. result congress got wiped out of bellari in recent election... talking of pan-india appeal the only leader that comes to mind today is Maywati she strikes the chord wherever she goes......... God save bjp/congress in up now, mayawati and mulayam are getting close... Buckle up for third front rule with mayawati as PM.. Communists beware shen this happens the subsequent election will make suremaywati has gobbled up their votes too..... Maya juggernaut is on the move...

(1) Problem is those who search on internet do not matter in indian politics (2) Lurker you are wrong I can show u n number of instances where RSS/BJP has extended support to CPI/CPM leaders .. Just watch Advani's address at india today conclave of this year u will know what I am hnting about.. but I dare you to find any similar courtesy coming from communists... For being cynic u will have to be educated. poor illiterate ones find solace with anyone who could address their bread and butter issue there is no room for fortified ideological stand in their world.
