Now, this line returns to haunt the accused in the Patan gang rape case. After having surrendered, to save themselves from getting lynched by parents of the students of DIET-PTC, Patan, on February 4, these six accused, now lodged in Patan sub-jail fear the worst — fellow inmates. The accused indulging in sexual abuse, especially with children, is something even hardened criminals and murderers cannot have regard for. So those being tried under Section 376 (raping a woman) or 377 (unnatural sex ) of the IPC are most likely to be cleaning toilets and sleeping outside an open lavatory in the jail. If one goes to jail on murder charges, he might gain respect from fellow inmates. But, if he is in the prison as an accused or a convict for rape, then from the time he enters the jail, his life is hell. Under the unwritten code he is subject to mental, physical and sexual assault. The first welcome comes from the jail staff which gives him a sound thrashing. Then, in the barracks, the prisoners individually and in groups beat up the new inmate at random. "Special treatment" is reserved for those charged for having unnatural sex, like homosexual inmates who make them their partners. Even the rich are not spared under the prisoner's code for rapists. An accused who was released recently from the Sabarmati Central Jail told TOI that even Sajal Jain, the prime accused in the Bijal Joshi gang rape case, had to go through punishment under this code. I will rent it next week ) ... some of the movies based in Bihar scared the shyt out of me ... especially the one where an NRI returns to Bihar with his wife and dies leaving his wife behind to fight for her life and freedom .. :omg:

This is all just a sense of preservation of their self worth, a need to feel dignified and a laughable attempt at self amelioration... Most prisoners feel the need to prove themselves, even if it is just in the eyes of their peers, that they are potentially good people trapped in their circumstances and victim of inevitability. while something can be said about criminals and convicts being victims of a society where opportunities and avenues are not easily accessible, such vigilante judgements are really another form of exploitation. criminals accussed of rape are somehow perceived to be at the rock bottom of the in the "heirarchy of heneousness" when one could argue that a malpracticing doctor who has caused several wrongful complications/deaths/miscarriadges has had a higher per capita "injurious" effect on society. hence, such summary judgements cannot be encouraged. furthermore, often the targets of such vigilante judgements behind the iron bars are the prisoners who are usually the least protected. we never hear of the prisoner's code of ethics and how harsh it is in its dealings with the corrupt politician imprisoned for exploitation of thousands, someone whose damange to the society has been overwhelming? what a rapist needs above all is psychological help, not a reciprocal attack (by that logic, should the prison cells of burgulars be periodically ranksacked and their supply of toilet paper stolen?)
