THX_1138 Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Well for the ladies, the first and possibly the most compelling reason would be Benjamin Bratt, but regrettably for us guys, there is no eye candy. Which sort of makes sense considering that a legion of scientists would not likely include beauty queens. Anyways, A&E decided to remake, or rather in Ron Mooresque fashion, "re-imagine" the Andromeda Strain story, based on a Michael Crichton classic of the same title. While many of us might be familiar with the novel, and the subsequent movie which was quite well made for its time, this new miniseries version borrows considerably from the movie, adding some new touches on its own. However, it was the not the awesome visual effects, all of which are CGI and by television standards, quite fantastic, it was the attention to detail, and the theoretical considerations that in inculcated into the plot. Like the novel, the story begins with a capsule returning from space, rather crashing unexpectedly, and contained in the capsule is a super virus. The capsule belonged to the Scope project, again as in the book, and brings with it this peculiar virus that is super adaptable, super infectious and virtually 100% lethal. the movie builds on from there, and runs parallel to the novel except towards the end where it diverges, and becomes a lot more darker. What i loved in the movie was the periodic mention of buckyballs, a 60 atom Carbon structure envisioned by Buckmeister Fuller, a renowned Chemist (from my alma mater!!! yippee!) who is unanimously regarded as the greatest nano-scientist ever. Apart from that, there is mention of a Lawrencium and Euclidean wormholes, and while they belong exclusively in the realm of science fiction at the moment (though theoretically possible, but hitherto unobserved); extremophiles such as those residing in the bottom of the ocean, and numerous other scientific phenomenon that would make for fascinating story telling if it weren't for their obscurity and un-receptibility to the ordinary, science illiterate joe. Do check out the miniseries, it released on DVD last week and is available at your local rental store, or download a bootleg copy of the net (you know how). This miniseries deserves a viewing!
