Once something remarkable happened at an NDC meeting in 2002. Chandrababu Naidu, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and one of the most active participants in all such forums, suggested that in addition to having formal meetings with fixed agendas, there was a need for a free-wheeling brainstorming get-together outside the Capital to discuss major developmental issues before the nation. Most chief ministers, including those belonging to Congress-ruled states, endorsed this novel idea. S M Krishna, who was then the chief minister of Karnataka, even offered to host the conclave in his state. Vajpayee entrusted the task of making preparations for this conclave to Dr Prodipto Ghosh, an erudite officer who was then secretary to the Prime Minister, and me. A high-profile Congress politician, who earlier served on the planning board of Karnataka and is now a minister in the UPA government, was an enthusiastic participant in this effort. It was felt that in addition to having key ministers in the NDA government, the conclave should also benefit from the knowledge and experience of senior leaders in the opposition. Accordingly, the Prime Minister asked me to meet Dr Manmohan Singh, who was then the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and for whom Vajpayee had genuine respect. Although Dr Singh was non-committal about his participation in the conclave, he welcomed the proposed attempt to build dialogue and political consensus on major national issues. Given the informal nature of the proposed conclave, the venue chosen for it was the sprawling and serene Infosys campus in Bangalore. Accordingly, Dr Ghosh and I went there to interact with senior Infosys executives. A separate preparatory meeting was also held with Krishna’s officers in Vidhan Soudha. However, within a few days, the idea of PM’s retreat with CMs came crashing down. Krishna informed Vajpayee that the Congress president disfavoured her party’s CMs attending it. Later, I asked Krishna — he is one of the gentlest politicians that I have known — “What happened?†“You know, Madam....†His incomplete reply said it all. Anyone who knows about India’s problems in governance and development would agree that their solution hinges on three imperatives: a strong Prime Minister, strong chief ministers and consensus-driven Centre-State relations transcending political barriers. During her 10 years in office, the Congress president has demonstrated her lack of faith in all three.

Seems like present Congress government is on the verge of Break-up and the election is looming large, the moment support is withdrawn. However, there is still something in it, Let's have a quick look at the current position of ruling coalition, before we talk about Nuclear deal. United Progressive Alliance (UPA) -- Total MPs = 218 Total MPs required in Loksabha to form a simple majority = 273 Communist Parties supporting outside with Total MPs = 59 So at present Congress led UPA has total 218+59= 277 -- just enough for simple majority. Now, if Left parties, under Chinese pressure, withdraw support from UPA, it will come in minority and a simple no-confidence motion put by BJP will be enough for MMS+Sonia to kiss goodbye. BUT Here comes Samajwadi Party in the fray -- the worst opportunist from our own fertile lands of UP. Suddenly, Mullaayam it seems has cut a deal with Congress. Samajwadi Party -- Total MPs = 36 Junta Dal (Sikoolar) = 3 Total=39. so, 218+39 = 257 Still a solid, 16 MPs short to form a government. Now, Bahujan Samaj Party, another dirty player from UP *sigh*, is sitting with Total 18 MPs with three being expelled, it still has 16 MPs, enough to save Kaangressi honor and dignity! So, it's clear that if Congress and Sonia Manio decides for a showdown in parliament, they have to buy Mayawati first, or they have to drill hole in NDA coalition and get the number, by offerring lucrative cabinet positions, monetary benefit to MPs.

Now question is --- WHY Congress is suddenly going all out in war with Commies of India, so much so that they are risking their own government! There are subtle reasons behind that, which unfortunately none of our stooopid mainstream media is capable of analysing. Reason no. 1 = botched up handling of Terrorists such as Afzal, sachar commission for minority appeasement, headcount of Muslims to please them, Setu Samundram stand off has virtually exposed the sinister motives of Sonia Manio. Reason no.2 = Inflation running at an all time high of 11%, has made this government highly unpopular at the moment, among masses. So the only reason, Congress can expect some face saving is by playing "Victim" game in the name of Nuke deal. There is a media campaign "in favor" of deal, has painted a rosy picture to common Indians that this Nuclear deal is the only best thing happened to India after cold Lassi. So ridding on the largely "positive" sentiments generated by American makreting machineries in Indian media, Sonia wants to encash it by becoming "Victim" and thus sacrificing their own government for the cause of Nuclear deal. this may help them offest some of their 4 years failed governance and current inflation, rising cost anger among people. Moreover, the government will anyway complete it's 5 years in 2009, so if election happens now, it won't be a burden on Election Commission.
