BTW this case sounds liek Kurmi as backward caste in Bihar.. You won't be able to differentiate Kurmi from any other socalled upper caste rajuput bhumihar kayastah but yet kurmi is in the list of backward caste due to politics of numbers.. I guess Malik muslim draws close resemblance to kurmi caste..
Lurker Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Islam certainly doesnt argue in favour of casteism but Muslims, specially subcontinent Muslims, are heavily into Casteism. There would be a few here and there who dont beleive in it but a good amount of them do. Marriage inside caste is quite common and I have seen many a Muslims mention to my face how their ancestors were Rajputs etc etc. Strange thing is when you tell the same people that if their ancestors were Rajput it would invariably mean their ancestors were Hindus and they would all go might pi$$ed. I concur with your observation against Kurmis. They are quite well off and i dare day even better than many of the so called forward castes. Strange thing is Kurmis see to gell well with "Forwards" but have big power struggle with say Yadavs.

I am not sure about kurmi gelling well with other upper castes Kurmi/Bhumihaar-rajput-brahmin fight I was unaware of before I visited BIT sindri at the insistance of my cousin studying there.. They have proper fight going on with guns/bombs etc for no reason.. Thanks to reservation kurmis outnumber all the other upper castes combined in that insitute and they are the ring leader of other lower caste.. I asked my brother why do you guys fight answer was well it's tradition it has been going on since ever and in the early days itself thanks to seniors battle-lines get drawn...... My cousin was the gang leader there he became so notorious that even today I could mention his name and get anything done in that institute.... I could not believe a harmless guy who used to get scared of dogs could wield arms and can assemble even bombs......

I could not believe a harmless guy who used to get scared of dogs could wield arms and can assemble even bombs...... He was right on. This was exactly how it was at RIT Jamshedpur as well. People having made groups based on groups and calling it "phyllum". There was no real reason really but most of these groups were pretty hardcore after a while. Basically it has been happening for a long while and so people followed, specially because of the way seniors molded you. Speaking of Kurmis in general you will see them having not much of an issue with forward caste people in Bihar. This comes from my experience with interacting with a few of these from their hardcore base of Nawada all the way to Barh/Barhaiya. Although in Barh area it is quite renegade really. Then again that whole taal area is such. But otherwise Kurmis have more of a power tussle with Yadavs. Atleast it was few years back, not sure of it now.
