http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/columns/story?columnist=drucker_joel&id=3520782&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab8pos1 Is India one of the top ten countries in tennis?? I find that very hard to believe
Not sure if India deserves to be one of the top 10 countries when it comes to Tennis but the writer is right on the money that India has been the pre-eminent Asian giant. We easily have the best record in Asia, whether in individual rankings or team. Our players, Vijay Amritraj and Ramanathan Krishnan, were both ranked under 10 and if I am not mistaken Krishnan made it to 4th and Amritraj 6th. Amritraj was also thought at one time to be the most talented young player in the world and he formed the fame ABC triad of 70s (Amritraj, Borg, Connors). After them Ramesh Krishnan managed a top 20 ranking and Leander Paes won Olympic bronze. In team events India has made it to Davis Cup finals 3 times if I am not mistaken, easily most amongst Asian nations. The duo of Paes Bhupathi would classify as one of the greatest doubles team of their era and easily the best Asian duo of all times. So yes the writer is right that we are an Asian powerhouse. Somehow it doesnt show up like that in Asian Games where we often end up losing to Japan and Thailand. Nice article though, thanks for sharing.
