So far it looks as if this will be a good thing for India. Last week he said, “The message I want to send is that we will be unyielding in stamping out the terrorist extremism we saw in Mumbai.†The problem is how, if at the same time he plans to work at improving ‘America’s image around the world and also in the Muslim world in particular’. The most important Muslim country where terrorism is concerned is Pakistan. It is the ‘epicentre’ of terrorism as speakers from all sides pointed out in last Thursday’s debate in the Lok Sabha. In South Asia the new American President needs Pakistan’s support to fight the Taliban and al-Qaeda. So it is not going to be easy for him to acknowledge that Pakistan is the epicentre of terrorism in the region or that there would have been no ‘terrorist extremism’ in Mumbai if this were not true. What I am saying is that India’s interest is in direct conflict with American interests in South Asia and so we must rely on our own resources to fight the Islamist groups in Pakistan whose hatred for us infidels knows no bounds. The ‘mujahideen’ who came to Mumbai had nothing to do with Kashmir. If Pakistan’s leaders want proof they only need to cruise YouTube. I do this regularly to get information on what men like Maulana Azhar Masood are up to and every time I come up with reams of venomous videotape against India. One of the videos that come up has shots of the demolition of the Babri Masjid with a hymn on avenging the demolition as background music. Another has the Indian national anthem playing over shots of murder and police brutality. The Islamists have formed a link with Khalistanis so I also came upon videos of Blue Star with shots of corpses piled up in the Golden Temple and the destroyed façade of the Akal Takht. Bhindranwale is the hero of this video and Indira Gandhi the villain. It is this kind of material that the terrorists who invaded Mumbai were bred on. One of the men who survived the massacre on the 18th floor of the Oberoi Hotel tells of how when people begged for their lives, the killers reminded them of Babri Masjid and Godhra. Then they were lined up and gunned down and when he lay pretending to be dead under the bodies that fell on him, he saw the killers come back and make videos of the massacre and laugh and joke about it. We cannot do much to stop Pakistan from producing monsters of this kind but we can do a great deal to deal with our internal propagators of Islamism. These are the Islamic seminaries that exist in towns and villages across India and that in the name of teaching the Koran teach young children of the superiority of Islam over the faith of us idol worshippers. This is done openly and the chief progenitor of this exclusivist brand of Islam is the Darul Uloom in Deoband. This bastion of 7th century Islam has lately taken to projecting a ‘moderate’ face by organising meetings for maulvis and speaking out against terrorism. It will make no difference until they abandon teaching their students exclusivist Islam. As a secular country we should put an end to all religious schools whether they are Muslim, Sikh, Hindu or Christian, but since this is not going to happen we should at least insist that pluralism be a fundamental teaching. Another thing that is of paramount importance is to discourage the sense of grievance that has been so carefully cultivated among India’s Muslims by our supposedly ‘secular’ political parties. Yes, there are far too many Muslims living in terrible poverty and degradation. But, for every Muslim who is poor and deprived, there are three Hindus. They do not rush off and start killing innocent people in the cause of some barbaric religious war. While it was reassuring to see the Leader of the Opposition and the Home Minister in total agreement during last week’s debate on terrorism, we need to acknowledge that the problem will not be solved just by better intelligence or better trained policemen. It goes deeper and its roots lie in religious schools that teach small children that their God is better than anyone else’s. This kind of teaching is routine in the average Indian madrassa and reaches colonised heights in the Darul Uloom, which looks as if a bit of Saudi Arabia has been shipped to Uttar Pradesh. India is not Saudi Arabia. Our values are different, our idea of religion is different. We must fight to preserve these differences.

you tube is a forum for free speech... free speech is not evidence for admission of guilt, at best it can be used to establish character. i can tell you this with absolute certainty since in a trial on which my s.o. worked on, the prosecution used youtube profiles and myspace pages to establish character, that too with much protest from the defense... nothing more. indeed its a fool's paradise if one is attempting to argue that pakistan is not the center of islamic terrorism in the world at the moment, but nonetheless, the burden of evidence rests on the accusers. so far, the evidence has not be provided in a global arbitration court, and it must be soon. at the very least, india should aim to convince the security council that it is indeed pakistan that has perpetrated these attacks, or atleast provides safe haven to organizations directly responsible. that is not asking too much, that is the least india must do... on the other hand, it is not a concealed fat that islam is vulnerable to exploitation for extremist agenda(s).

If anyone needs proof, they only need to look at the effete, namby-pamby manner in which the Indian state has dealt with the aftermath of the attack on Mumbai. Not only has it been unable to force Pakistan to act against the jihadis who fight their war against India from its soil, it has not even been able to act against the enemies within.
