Ridiculing Paswan the party spokesman Shivanand Tiwary said there was not enough land in the state to fulfill such a promise. According to a survey conducted by the Centre, 42 per cent of people in Bihar are living below poverty line (BPL), though the reality suggests that 62 per cent people of the state are BPL. If the survey is taken into account, out of the ten crore population of Bihar, 4 crore would be in the BPL list. If ten per cent of the BPL population living in urban areas was subtracted from the four crore BPL people, there would be around 2 crore or 72 lakh families comprising five members each, he said. Tiwary further said that to fulfill the promise of allotting 3 bighas of land to each BPL family, would require acquisition of 2.16 lakh bighas that is, approximately 40 lakh acre.
