Lurker saab, I have started with an original recitation from Sahir Ludhianvi. Kabhi Kabhi continues to be my favourite poem of Sahir. Now we can start the discussion we talked about in the other thread.

Thanks for putting the link Gunner, I did not even have a clue that this recording existed. Suraj is exactly right about the beautiful verbage. A tit bit on this song/poem Kabhi Kabhi. I remember reading someplace that this is also one of Sahir's favorite work. It was written at the backdrop of his failed affair with Amrita Pritam the noted Punjabi/Urdu/Hindi writer. The two had strong feelings for each other but the relationship did not come to fruition. The line that kind of gives away that sense of complete hopelessness is Magar ye ho na saka. Magar ye ho na saka aur ab yeh alaam hai ke tu nahin tera ghum teri justzoo bhi nahin gujar rahi hai yeh jindagi jaise issi kissi sahare ki aarzoo bhi nahin. It is said that Amrita Pritam had saved whatever stuff she could pick off Sahir, including his cigarette butts. After Sahir's death Amrita would puff one of these from time to time hoping that the fumes of hers would be passed on to the next world to Sahir. Reminds me of the title of that Doordarshan series of yore - Kahan Gaye woh Log?? xxx

Another of Sahir's gems. The philosphy of all the vagabonds in life, whether you smoke or not. Barbaadiyon ka shok manana fazool tha Barbaadiyon ka jasn manaata chala tha. 9wm7FsZ45xo MODS could you change the title to Sahir ke naam ?

The actual words of Sahir's immortal poem Kabhi Kabhi for those interested: Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai... Ke zindagi teri zulfon ki narm chhaon mein Guzarane paati to shaadaab ho bhi sakati thi Ye teergi jo meri zeest ka muqaddar hai Teri nazar ki shuaon mein kho bhi sakati thi Ajab na tha ke main begaana-e-alam reh kar Tere jamaal ki raanaaiyon mein kho rahata Tera gudaaz badan teri neem-baaz aankhein Inhin haseen fazaaon mein mehav ho rahata Pukaratin mujhe jab talkhiyan zamaane ki Tere labon se halaawat ke ghoont pi leta Hayaat cheekhati phirti barahana-sar, aur main Ghaneri zulfon ke saaye mein chhup ke ji leta Magar ye ho na saka, aur ab ye aalam hai Ke tu nahin, tera gham, teri justajoo bhi nahin Guzar rahi hai kuchh is tarah zindagi, jaise Ise kisi ke sahaare ki aarazoo bhi nahin Zamaane bhar ke dukhon ko lagaa chuka hun gale Guzar raha hun kuchh anjaani rahguzaaron se Muheeb saaye meri simt badhate aate hain Hayaat-o-maut ke pur-haul khaar-zaaron se Na koi jaada na manzil na roshani ka suraag Bhatak rahi hai khalaaon mein zindagi meri Inhin khalaaon mein rah jaoonga kabhi khokar Main jaanata hun meri hum-nafas, magar yun hi Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai... Btw I haven't met a lot of women capable of resisting this poem Indian or western. They go all misty eyed.. and I recite this poem to all of them...:winky:

Gunner saab aapne ye kai martaba jikr kiya hai ke Kabhi Kabhi is perhaps the favorite poem of its kind for you. Magar aapne kabhi yeh jikr nahin kiya ke is gaane ki kaifiyat aapke liye itni kyun hai? What do you like so much about the song? That it has both romance at its most optimistic and tragedy in realism at the same time? Jaraa roshni daalein. Meanwhile here is another gem from Sahir. cE5q9kst-Zc A comment on Youtube by a poster writes simply - The kind of song that can change your life. I concur.

Lurker saab aapne kafi gahra sawaal uttaya hai. Kabhi Kabhi waake hi mere liye kaafi maine rakhta hai. Is kavitha ne mujhe apne aap par aur apne soch par ghor se nazar dalne par kaafi majboor kiya hai. Ab sawaal ut tha hai kyun, is ka yehi jawaab hai ke maine do cheeze seekhi hai is kavitha par vichar karne se, aap ek dusre vyakthi ko itna pyaar kar sakthe ho ki aap ke zindagi ke saare ghum, talkiyon se woh aap ki iffazat kar saktha hai. In simple words it provides you a retreat. Dusri baat yeh hai ki jab yeh iffzat aap ko nahi milthi ya aap se door ho jathi hai tho iska aap pe kya asar padtha hai ye bhi main samajtha hoon. Aur is soch ke peeche mere zindagi ki ek choti si ghatna bhi hai jisne mujhe ek dusre hi raaste pe le aaya hai pyaar ke vichar par. Aur ye bhi ho saktha hai ki I am a recluse at heart just like Sahir. For sheer optimism and unbridled joy of reading poetry Rumi is unparalleled. the mix of dervish sufism and his own view of the world together makes it a ajoy which humans will enjoy for many centuries to come. Sahir and his kabhi kabhi is my retreat ....

Lurker saab since you named Amrita Pritam, something from her: "Ajj akhan Waris Shah nu Kitte kabran vichon bol Te ajj kitab-e-ishq da Koi agla varka phol Ik royi si dhi Punjab di Tu likh-likh mare ven Ajj lakhan dhian rondiyan Tainu Waris Shah nu kehan" I must admit I have not read a lot of Amrita Pritam works except a few very famous ones I have heard of. However I know something about her life, she was a woman way ahead of her times probably ahead of Sahir as well.

Gunner saab jindagi ka majaa to gehrai mein hi hai janaab. Woh kahte hain na ke gahre paani mein utarne se moti milta hai? Ab dekhiye aapne kis khubsurati se yeh baat jaahir ki ke yeh nazm aapko kyun kar pasand hai. Yakeenkan agar koi jindagi mein itna khaas ho to saari takleefon se hifazat kar deta hai aapki, aur jab na ho to uski keemat samajh mein aati hai. Although the romantic that I am, it still makes me think that the sum total of such affection is finite. Agar aap kissi pe itna dhyaan dete hain ke woh aapke jehan mein 24 ghanton rahe phir jab baad mein - tu nahin tera ghum teri justazoo bhi nahin - ka manzar ho to lagta hai ke woh saari baatein sacch thi ya bas ek khubsurat haadsa? Waise ek baat pe roshni daalein aap. You mentioned earlier that you have a South Indian background but obviously aap Hindi aur Urdu donon mein pundit hai. Phir Punjabi se bhi baawasta hai aur pharsi bhi! Huzoor ye language mein itni dilchaspi aadmi do karanon se leta hai. Ek to woh agar paidaishi linguist ho. Ya phir larki. So aap bhi kah dein ke baat kya hai. Tab tak ke liye Saahir ki ek aur nazm. I saw this movie in my Mom's lap at Gaya's Railway cinema. Was tooooooooo young to remember anything but this song I still remember. My favorite piece. Haalat ke teeron se chalni hai badan apni paas aao ke seenon ke kuch dard to tham jaayein.... inb2oFgg_AE
