I understand redneck country-types not being able to pronounce Iraq and Iran, but it really irritates me when snooty, know-it-all-world-traveling elitist NPR newscasters say "Airack" and "Airan." I mean ... y'all can say "oderves" (hors d'oeuvres) or Shoeshefsky (Krzyzewski), and you can't say IRAN ... or IRAQ ... like "FAH-THER?"

I kind of remember Fareed Zakaria was the guest then.

There was even a debate over this. :dontknow: that'z cuz one of his room-mates was a pakistani ... so he made sure he said the word 'pakistan' correctly without the accent :)

yoda Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Relax. It is the American pronounciation, so when you are in the US or around Americans, nothing wrong in saying Airaq. That said, I would love for everyone to pronounce english words the same way, apparently ain't going to happen.
