Lok Ayukta Santosh Hegde''s recent comment on extent of corruption by government officials was alarming and the government would take a "stern stand" against corruption, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said. He said a retired judge of the high court would probe the allegations of corruption in purchase of coal by state-run Karnataka Power Corporation Limited from 2002. The Chief Minister said before his government assumed the office last year, a private firm was given a contract of Rs 500 crore every year for "washing" of coal alone, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 3,500 crore to the state. Commenting on the power scenario, he said the state has opportunities for an additional generation capacity of 20,000 mw in the next few years. Expressing concern over sections of people holding more than one BPL (below poverty line) rations cards, Yeddyurappa said criminal case would be slapped against them. He said a comprehensive inquiry would be conducted by the Lok Ayukta to look into irregularities in this regard.
