ViruRulez Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Mumbai Two days after the order on taxi permits, the Maharashtra government’s draft cultural policy has recommended that ministers should speak in Marathi at government functions and also interact with foreign dignitaries in Marathi, with interpreters to help them communicate. On Wednesday, the state government mandated that those seeking taxi permits in the state should know Marathi and also have lived in the state for at least 15 years. But following national outrage, the order was diluted on Thursday, to include knowledge of any local language like Hindi or Gujarati. The draft cultural policy submitted to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Friday has recommended a slew of measures to promote Marathi language and culture, including setting up an academy for spoken Marathi. The policy is scheduled to be formally declared on May 1 — the foundation day of the state. The committee, headed by Dr A H Salunke, was formed in August last year. The recommendations include: setting aside four per cent of the state’s budget for cultural affairs, setting up a fund, constructing a “Bhasha Bhavan†in Mumbai, creating a dictionary of standard Marathi, setting up an academy to promote spoken Marathi, appointing Marathi officers on the lines of Hindi officers in state government offices and central government departments, constructing amphitheatres in tehsils, drama theatres with 350 to 500 seats in district headquarters and creating a state Lalit Kala Academy to promote fine arts. Kasab can speak Marathi, why can’t migrants: Sena MUMBAI: Attacking the Ashok Chavan government for toning down the order on taxi permits, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Friday warned of a public backlash if Marathi was not respected in Mumbai. In a signed open letter to Chavan published in the Sena mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray said Maharashtrians had expressed surprise about a Congress CM taking a pro-Maharashtrian stand and were hence “expecting the Michael Jackson style moonwalk done by you within a few hoursâ€. An editorial in Saamna stated, “When Ajmal Kasab can learn Marathi, (and) answer questions in court in Marathi, then why can’t migrant taxi drivers, (and) people like (Samajwadi Party MLA) Abu Azmi learn Marathi? http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/Now--only-Marathi-with-foreign-guests/570802/
Guest Hiten. Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 we ridicule Pakistan for carrying a consevative mind and going back to stone age, where exactly are we ****ing heading ? Is the Maharashtra govt so incompetent to curb the unreasonable and stupid demands made out everyday ? this is really really depressing
suma25 Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 ^^ well yes these demands are stupid . But I dont think there is anything wrong with asking migrants to learn marathi .
DomainK Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 ^^ well yes these demands are stupid . But I dont think there is anything wrong with asking migrants to learn marathi . There is everything wrong with that. :omg:
suma25 Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 There is everything wrong with that. it should not be a condition for getting a job but . if a state provides him free house,(probably electricity and water as well) ,dont think anything is wrong with state expecting or telling him to learn the state language.

When the govt of maharastra gives something to a citizen of INDIA its doing that from the grants it gets from the centre or from the money it collects from all citizens of Maharashtra not from the only ones who know marathi.
Aaku Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 ^^ well yes these demands are stupid . But I dont think there is anything wrong with asking migrants to learn marathi . Who is the MAHA govt to order around citizens of India ? :| Maha needs to realise its a part of India.. and not vice versa! You go to Punjab and theres nothing wrong if they ask you to learn Punjabi ? Its just stupid :/
Aaku Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Kasab can speak Marathi, why can’t migrants: Sena SENAs a bunch of ****heads ! GOD please BOMB their headquaters! Pleeeeeeeeease !

And it was the very same people and not just' marathi' speaking people whose money was to be used to up to rehabilitate this people protested against the slums being made legal. Edit : As far as i know only the Dharavi slum rehabilitation scheme was made using central govt grant .No other slum rehab(whatever has been done) was made using central govt grant.
Aaku Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Did i say the govt should force it on the migrants or making it as a pre requisite condition for staying in Maharashtra Government asking-Government forcing.. Whats the difference ? :/ A rule passed, is a rule. Govt jhakk maarney kay liye naee bethi.. Its was stupid for them to 'ASK' migrants to learn marathi. I dont understand why MAHA is making sucha fool outta self !

At least thats how i see it.
Lurker Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 ^^ well yes these demands are stupid . But I dont think there is anything wrong with asking migrants to learn marathi . Thats not how it works Suma. The immigrants always have a tough time learning local language, not only Marathi. However the second generation, or their kids, pick the dialect very easily. This may have something to do with the fact that as we grow older it becomes more difficult to learn a different language. My brother-in-law,who hails from Mulund btw, is as much proficient in Marathi as Raj Thackeray. However his parents, who have now lived in Mumbai for well over 40 years, still have difficultly picking the local lingo. I have observed the same thing with another of my relatives who lives in Bangalore right now. His kid, all of 4 years, can speak chaste Kannada and talk to everyone from local kaamwali to paanwaala(who gets him his Poppins :haha: ). However my relative, and his wife, have a tough time picking Kannada. The larger point, in my opinion, is the lack of a common Indian language that should be accepted all over India and should be taught in local schools from get go. Of course this would start a whole - Oh-they-are-pushing-Hindi-down-our-throats rhetoric. As for Sena and their comment on Qasab why is that a surpise? The gutter mentality of right wing brigade has always been similar to right wing morons from across the border. No wonder they are now using Qasab as a shining example. xxx
triam Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 The slums (for most part) were encouraged and abetted by various governments during various phases for the vote bank. Even now, most of the rent money frm the slums are lining various politician's pockets. So, lets not assume that the govt is doing a favor to the poor people. Secondly, the govt is there to serve the people not to order them around, if the govt cannot provide decent living conditions and accomodation for the people who provide a valuable service to the state (dont tell me that mumbai's whole business wont collapse if the govt decides to evict all the slum dwellers out of the city), what other option do they have?
suma25 Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Secondly, the govt is there to serve the people not to order them around, if the govt cannot provide decent living conditions and accomodation for the people who provide a valuable service to the state (dont tell me that mumbai's whole business wont collapse if the govt decides to evict all the slum dwellers out of the city), what other option do they have? Firstly they should ask the state govt from which state they hail from to ask why they cant provide jobs for them in the first place rather then cribbing infront of maharashtra govt for help whenever there has been an effort to demolish the illegal slums .laloo yadav Nitish kumar, Maywati should be the last people lecturing the maharashtra govt on what to do . Most of the slums are a strain on mumbai's ecology ,water resources, drainage system whole host of other problems . mumbai wasnt supposed to hold this much population in the first place whatever the more land is reclaimed to make room for housing the more disastrous it will be the best option to shift all of these people on the outskirts of mumbai slowly and gradually and create job opportunities outside mumbai . There should also be cap on the buildings and skycrapers coming up in the ciy until the civic infra is improved otherwise another disaster is in the offing.
ViruRulez Posted January 23, 2010 Author Posted January 23, 2010 ^^ well yes these demands are stupid . But I dont think there is anything wrong with asking migrants to learn marathi . seriously suma25 never expected such a crap logic from you .. nobody needs to ask them to learn Marathi .. if the immigrant needs he/she shall learn it himself/herself ... it is normally seen that people living in a place gradually understand and learn the boli after a few years .. that is natural and that is how it should be ... there is no reason for forcing or asking anybody to learn anything .. anyways if any central or state govt. should ask anybody to learn any language then it should be English because ultimately it is the only common language in India as well as outside .. but it th eneed that makes people learn languages not by forcing or asking.. for example, if you see cricket itself many cricketers dont know to speak proper English when to come to the team but after a few years they are fluent in English..it is because of need that people learns languages not by forcing anyone to do so
suma25 Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 ^ wtf read my posts in this thread again . what the hell is wrong with the govt asking the public staying in maharshtra to learn marathi .There is a difference in govt asking and govt enforcing .which people in this thread don't seem to get for some reason.its upto the people/migrants to take it up but there is nothing wrong in govt saying '"hey look you are staying in maharashtra , ,marathi is the local language and it will help you better if you learn marathi language to adapt better to marathi culture ......"how is that forcing marathi down people's throat
suma25 Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Lurker, thats what I said or meant thru my post earlier that if the govt wants to encourage marathi among migrants is ask them to learn the language, if they want to adapt better or probably migrate to other parts of maharashtra blah, blah ...... . Its up to them whether to learn it or not.
