DomainK Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 One thing that is clearly certain from these photos is that Shoaib Malik was firmly a part of the anti-Mullah brigade within the Pakistani team. Remember, after Saeed Anwar, there was this whole host of people within the Pakistani team beginning to look horrifically traditional? Guys like Inzamam, Yousuf etc. There were reports that (this was a good 5-6 years ago), that it was mada mandatory that all the members of the Pakistani team do Namaas. There was even talk of how the Pakistani team, while traveling in an international flight, insisted with the cabin crew that space be made for their team, inside the plane, for them to say their prayers. If that wasnt enough, the Pakistani team, in a rather bizarre way, insisted that they will address all the press conference in the 2007 WC (I think) only in Urdu, an obvious conservative shift. They later backtracked from their position, which wasnt so hard to predict after all. Looks like right from then onwards, the Pakistani team has split right down the centre b/w the Mullah brigade and the regular 'I like to have fun and party' dudes and that, in part, explains the constant source of infighting and backbiting inside the team. You're always going to be in trouble if half your team is absolutely conservative, sporting 3 foot beards and doing Namas 5 times a day, while the other half just wants to have at it, like most young dudes want. Very interesting.
