IPLgate: ECB mail puts BCCI on weak wicket Sanjeeb Mukherjea | CNN-IBNPosted on May 08, 2010 at 16:11 | Updated May 08, 2010 at 16:22 New Delhi: A day after English counties dismissed the England cricket board's allegations that Lalit Modi was trying to set up a parallel Twenty20 league in England, CNN-IBN has gained exclusive access to the ECB mail sent to the BCCI that shows that the second charge sheet against the suspended IPL commissioner is based on weak facts. The mail reveals that nine English counties were campaigning for a high-profile Twenty20 tournament in England and further indicated the possible modelling of the tournament. The mail also refutes the BCCI's claim that Modi was offering financial rewards to counties to start a parallel IPL. The mail indicates that Lalit Modi was not trying to bargain for more power for the franchisees and that he suggested that the balance between club and country should be negotiated properly. According to the mail, Modi also spoke for protecting ODI cricket in the face of the threat that T20 brought to the game. There is no mail from Lalit Modi's side as indicated by the ECB mail to BCCI and the mail wasn't leaked to the ECB but sent as per request.

Fact still remains that the counties held a meeting with Modi (without the approval of the IPL committee I presume) and offered deals to them without taking any one else into consultation. There is nothing new here, just Modi acting as if he is the be all and end all of all things related to IPL. Apparently the BCCI were ok with this till he decided to take them on.

No Sir, the fact remains that Modi had a meeting with some representatives of English Counties. The meeting was set up by IMG and was nothing more then a discussion on how county cricket could be made more commercially viable for its stake holders. No DEALS were offered unless you are privy to some information which we are not. Modi was not expected to take prior approval of the GC for every meeting that he would hold during the course of his life. Also, have mercy on the 12 other members of GC, they were so blissfully asleep, they would not have woken up even if they were asked to come for the meeting. I dont see the crime in this sequence of events.

Clarke and Modi settle out of court

An ECB statement said: "In May 2010 Giles Clarke, chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, sent an email to the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the contents of which were subsequently widely reported in the British and international media which resulted in libel proceedings being issued by Lalit Modi. "This statement confirms that the parties have agreed to settle the litigation on confidential terms."
