Murali-Leg spin?

Recommended Posts

If murali did get officially banned from bowling his offies (I DO NOT think he chucks btw), would he be able to continue his career as a leggie? I think he'd have some decent success, getting some good turn in this vid. [ame=

It's all hypothetical. I'm just wondering if murali would have possibly had the skills to become a world class leggie had he chosen leg spin over offspin for some reason or another.

In one of his interview he mentioned something about this: Quote from an old(ish) tamil interview: "..... legspin pottu pazhagirukken, so offspin potten, ball nalla turn acchu.." which roughly translates to "I was used to bowling legspin, so I bowled offspin and the ball turned nicely..". He was talking about his childhood days and it didnt make sense six months ago and still doesnt make any sense (; at 3:30: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kN7zFYrlUo]YouTube- Muralitharan-intewrview[/ame]

Quite incredibly, he was called for chucking while bowling perfect leg breaks in Australia!! But he is the god of spin bowling. He could've pulled it off even bowling leg breaks.

Amused by the commentators "he's bowled a Shane Warne!" Last time I checked, Warne didn't own the rights to leg break bowling. But these are Aussie comms, so it was inevitable.

Personally I think he would have had a hard time bowling leg spin. With that bent arm of his it would have been difficult to generate requisite rip. He is better off bowling his doosras as leg spinners with his off spinners' action. In fact I think leg spin among all the bowling styles is the hardest one to have an illegal action with. Just to make it clear - I do NOT think that Murali has an illegal action. His arm is bent but it does NOT straighten. Hence it does not constitute an illegal action. He is quite simply one of a kind. Perhaps the only one of his kind.

I am surprised he was never called while throwing the ball from the boundary line in Australia.
