Number of IPL matches could be reviewed - Pataudi

like some others over here have suggested that it should be played throughout the cricketing season like the EPL, i think it would be difficult cos in soccer, the international tournaments and friendlies are very few compared to cricket where there are test and odi series... but but.. if the franchisees and the public do not mind waiting for about 8-9 months to find out the winner, then IPL could be played in 2 phases... Phase 1 - March/April - All teams plays other team once, either home or away... No. of matches = 45 (10 teams playing each other once) Calender span = 35 days or 5 weeks including saturdays and sundays Phase 2 - Sep/Oct - Second leg matches (if Mumbai played Blore in mumbai during 1st phase, they will play them in blore in the 2nd phase) no. of matches = 45 + 4 Calender span = 39 days No adjustments to be made to the international calenders. If India is playing test cricket, then Blore should not think of having Dravid in their team. If we are playing ODIs at that time, then Chennai should not think of Raina... same is the case with other Intnl players as well. Franchises have to learn to make optimum use of their resources... They should not force any player doing international duty to come and play for them. The contracts have to be rewritten accordingly. Now that Modi is not around to force the BCCI or other boards to create a window for IPL, the other panel members should run it in a way that it does not affect the International calendar.

lol t20s and tests are separate formats of the game. Big bash has certainly helped Australia become the best (almost unbeatable) t20 team in the world in just 3 years time. India won the first world t20 when nobody was taking the competition seriously and since then haven't won a single super 8 game...
So you are saying that Aus is so good this year because of big bash but are you forgetting that they were the worst last year, losing in the very 1st stage to minnows and crashing out. So big bash basically makes the team worst before making then the best? So there is still a chance that IPL makes india the best the next WC?? That's great news!!! I wonder what made England so good then?

Absurd. Do you then believe that any franchise would bid for an Indian International player? The 3rd year already saw the franchise ignoring players with prior international commitment at the same time as IPL. This would lead the players and franchise not in sync with each other and could end IPL.

Zap.. Its upto them to bid for any player or not. And if they have bought a player and if that player is available only for say 50% of the matches, they will pay him only for those matches that he played. Isnt it? So they will still go ahead and buy players.. like how KP, Ross were not available for Blore and Gayle, Mc not available for KKR. This constraint should be considered as part and parcel of running the IPL franchise and the business bosses should come to terms with it. When big brand international players are not available, they will earnestly search for local talent and thats when new talents can be unearthed. And thats exactly how IPL should be run going fwd i.e a primarily domestic competition with international stars sprinkled here and there when available... that i think zappo, is the best way forward.

except that this wasn't the terms they commited their money on 3 years ago. You can't jut keep changing the contracts on the fly as it suits you. I can't figure why you still don't understand as far as the franchises are concerned this is a business not spot the domestic talent for Indian cricket board contest.

Then you will see Indian stars taking premature retirement to play in IPL like Gilly and others. Dravid, Sachin will not but our current crop is Yuvi, Nohit, Nehra etc. Players are human too. If someone comes to you and says that they will pay you to work for them, 2 or 3 times what you are making for the year, for doing the same work, you would take it without question. The players have the same choice esp when they have only a couple of years left. WI players have already fought with their boards on playing International cricket during IPL. SL board too did it. Players might not come out and say that IPL matters more but it is not good for either them or IPL to not consider each other.

Businesses have to adapt to the environment in which they operate. Investment Banks and Stoke Broking firms have to adapt to the changes and regulations enforced by the regulators like SEC or SEBI. Health care industry needs to adapt itself to the changes mandated by the Health ministry. If the Indian government says, lets not use Huwaei products in our defense installations, the business that gets affected by this directive has to abide by it and not question it. The software services industry in India, for years have been directly affected by the immigration requirements enforced by the US in issuing visas. isnt it. When things change businesses learn to adapt. Thats what we all do running our company and businesses. You mentioned "You can't jut keep changing the contracts on the fly as it suits you". Well that happens all the time. When the original contracts were signed in 2008, there was no clause that said that the tournament would be conducted in South Africa in 2009. Franchisees did lose out on the money that they would have generated had the matches been held in indian grounds, selling match tickets and other stuffs. Dint the franchisees adapt to that change? Under the circumstances that existed at the time, it was better than not having a n IPL at all for that year. Similarly, when Bangalore's semi final matches were withdrawn due to bomb blast, there must have been significant losses incurred by different businesses. I for one, did not get my ticket money refunded... So you cant say that contract once entered cannot be modified etc. If it is in the best interest of the game and the players, franchisees should relent. Otherwise they run into the risk of having no IPL at all in a few years from now. In the case of IPL, there is no government involvement. BCCI cannot act as they wish. So all concerned parties, should sit down for a discussion, in the interest of indian cricket and decide whats best to do. If Team India starts slipping in Test and ODIs as well and continue to suck in major events, people's anger and hatred would turn towards IPL and more and more ppl wil start hating it... so in order to secure their vested interests, the franchisees should also understand the gravity of the situation and make way for a better outcome. They cannot say, we dont care how India performs at international games, we are only worried about IPL. Let one of the IPL bosses to make that comment and leak that to media and you'll know how much of hatred that team would have to deal with.

I agree that early retirement could be an issue. But if someone wants to take that route, let be it. Also it will be a small percentage of such players you'll lose in a year. It will be those in the 33+ years bracket. If someone at 28 or 29 says, I am going to retire now (implicity saying that playing for IPL is important for me that playing for my country), the popularity of that player will be down in the drains.. IPL team will also not risk picking him next year because between this year and next year he would not have played any competitive cricket and hence chances are that he may not be in good form next year. Like we saw in this year's IPL, Warne, Gilly and Haydo were not a major impact. So from both players' and franchisee's perspective they should consider such major decisions of early retirement with a lot of caution. And even after that, if a Nohit Shuvarma decides to quit international cricket at 25 to play for reddy and his family, then let be it. We dont such guys to play for India and go suck in every major ICC event

They should look at playing IPL throughout the year' date=' with each team playing 2 matches a week, which is how EPL, NBA and just about every other major team sport is played. Once in a while there can be a couple of weeks gap to play a one test - 7 ODI series against Australia etc.[/quote'] Thats a good suggestion. But foreign players won't be available all year. Also, if IPL goes all year long, Ranji & CK Nayudu matches won't even get the usual 1 guard and 1 dog as the only viewers in the ground. Edit- thevortex is going to have a heart-attack when he sees your comment :P
