Once again lack of Indian strike bowlers was felt in India A team. I think Unadkat and Abdullah were rested after their marathon efforts against WI A. But it shows what a mess the selectors have made by choosing Ganapathy and Jaskaran instead of Mithun or Nacheem or Awana.

Picture: SNS Kevin Ferrie at Titwood 23 Jun 2010 The strains of Flower of Scotland could be heard from the Scotland dressing room at *Titwood last night following the home team’s extra*ordinary victory over India A*. That may seem, on the face of it, an over-reaction, given that this was not even a full One-Day International. Yet the manner of the victory that marked the start of a new era – Gordon Drummond took over captaincy of the national side on a permanent basis – was such that they were fully entitled to celebrate raucously. At 64 for seven, the Scots faced ignominious defeat. Instead, against a team largely composed of players with high-octane Indian Premier League experience, they showed remarkable character. Richie Berrington’s century led the recovery as the Greenock all-rounder confirmed his growing status with his first international century in a season in which he has already produced five half-centuries in ODIs and Scottish Saltires matches. He had also been among those who performed well with the ball even before he registered his 106 runs in an innings composed with real intelligence. He started with steely resolve, leaving umpteen balls alone, before launching a counterattack which included four 6s and eight 4s. He could not have done it without Moneeb Iqbal who offered staunch support with 67 runs before being run out by a direct hit off the first ball of the final over. It left Gordon Goudie, who had started the day spectacularly with two wickets in his opening over, to take further responsibility. He did, smashing the third ball of the over cross-batted through cover for the boundary that brought the required four runs to win. At no stage prior to that had the Scots been ahead on the Duckworth/Lewis chart that is as useful an indicator as any of which side is winning. Following that early burst from Goudie they had been in danger of letting the Indians take the game away from them as Ajinkya Rahane controlled their innings with a well-paced century, helped by Manoj Tiwary, with whom he enjoyed a 138-run partnership. Those two looked poised for a real blitz in the final 10 overs when they took a dozen runs from Matthew Parker’s comeback over, the 40th of the innings. The 20-year-old held his nerve, though, and more than played his part in keeping the target manageable, taking the catch off Berrington’s bowling that dismissed Tiwary then taking a couple of wickets of his own before Berrington also removed Rahane. Scotland looked in disarray prior to the Berrington/Iqbal stand, with only Ryan Flannigan offering much resistance. The way they turned things around can only bode well.
