Thousands toil to make Village liveable A mission clean-up has been embarked upon in the Commonwealth Games Village after it came under scathing criticism by the foreign delegates of the participating countries. With not more than eight days left for the Games, the labourers are forced to work at a maddening speed in order to meet the deadline as foreign teams wait to take a final call about moving to the village. Thousands of nameless and faceless labourers are working day and night. The Games depend largely on them, but ironically, they are overstrained with little wages and negligible safety assurance. "It is an ongoing process and a strategy for maintenance is being followed. We will resolve all concerns. The apartments have remained unoccupied and therefore some issues are coming up," said Dalbir Singh, village mayor. The army of cleaners include 500 workers provided by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation of Delhi (NDMC) along with 550 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) workers who are out to clean up the mess. Some 400 MCD sanitation employees and 150 supervisory staff were deployed in two shifts to clean the village. The NDMC is also involved in cleaning the dirt inside the village flats. The MCD is also busy dealing with the dog menace in the village. The civic agency has caught as many as 160 stray dogs from in and around the village. The job of cleaning the village and other venues was given to two main companies Kalpataru and A2Z. However, the performance of Kalpataru, which is in charge of cleaning the village residential towers, was found to be unsatisfactory. The OC is now contemplating to rope in more agencies. While A2Z, which is supposed to clean and maintain nearly 60 of the CWG premises for a cost of Rs 20 crore, will deploy 5,000 people. Fogging and spraying of anti-larval chemical were also conducted in the area. In an embarrassment to the organisers less than two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, the CGF had earlier this week termed the athletes village filthy and uninhabitable and gave the Organising Committee two days to sort out the mess. The village is also facing the problem of labour crunch as many of them refused to work because of poor wages.
