Acid test awaits iffy Delhi attack as TN meets Delhi sans injured Balaji It's least desirable to fight a heavyweight after finishing second-best against a relatively lightweight opponent. Such is the situation Delhi find themselves in their second match. Subhash Rajta reports. More... TN meets Delhi without injured Balaji Sports Reporter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TN only team to register outright win in the opening fixtures Delhi will miss leg-spinner Chetanya Nanda -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chennai: Tamil Nadu and Delhi will meet in an intriguing Ranji Trophy Elite Group ‘A' match that begins at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday. The inevitable back-story to the encounter is Delhi's first-innings win in last season's quarterfinal, which knocked an unbeaten Tamil Nadu out of the competition. Tamil Nadu was the only team to register an outright win in the opening Elite fixtures last week, but achieved that result against an Assam line-up short on exposure to the top division. If the Chepauk wicket remains as slow as it was during the course of that game, first innings lead is likely to separate Tamil Nadu and Delhi yet again, considering key injuries that have robbed both bowling attacks. The host starts the match without Lakshmipathy Balaji, who has been a new-ball talisman over the last two seasons. Balaji is out with a thigh strain. Delhi will miss leg-spinner Chetanya Nanda, who picked up a knee injury in the opener against Bengal, his comeback game after missing all of last season injured. Seventeen-year-old left-armer Vikas Mishra is likely to return in his place. Thus weakened, the two attacks might struggle to dismiss two of the best batting sides in Indian domestic cricket, especially if rain has a say. Virat Kohli, fresh from tonking 173 against Bengal, Shikhar Dhawan, the experienced Mithun Manhas and former Tamil Nadu man Rajat Bhatia, who averages 113.75 in four matches against his old team, form the core of a formidable Delhi lineup. Tamil Nadu's case Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu will hope that its collapse from 308 for four to 346 all out against Assam was a one-off, and not indicative of any chronic lower-order fragility, considering its policy of playing five bowlers. The top six, on the other hand, has a reassuring look to it. Abhinav Mukund, Arun Karthik, S. Badrinath and Dinesh Karthik have all scored heavily over the last two seasons, while S. Anirudha and R. Sathish made promising starts to the season against Assam with first-innings fifties. Delhi's case It's least desirable to fight a heavyweight after finishing second-best against a relatively lightweight opponent. Such is the situation Delhi find themselves in their second match. The last year's semi-finalists would have hoped to enter the ring against Tamil Nadu with at least three points, if not five, from their relatively easy opener against Bengal. But it was Manoj Tiwary's side that not only walked away with three points, but also exposed chinks in Delhi's bowling. As a result, the visitors will feel that extra pressure to snatch at least three points to prevent another slip. Picking up as many points as possible early on is imperative, but it's easier said than done, especially against hosts Tamil Nadu. The hosts have a batting line-up that can tear apart the Delhi attack if the bowlers don't improve upon their showing in the opening game. On a positive note, the bowlers could expect a little more assistance from the track here, but, on the flip side, they will have the likes of S Badrinath, A Mukund, Arun Karthik and Dinesh Karthik to contend with. Following the reversal against Bengal, Delhi might be tempted to change the composition of their pace battery. Pawan Suyal, the young left-arm quick, could be drafted in raise to the pace quotient and cause some unrest. With leg-spinner Chetanya Nanda not in the squad, left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra is set to get a game. Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, would be relaxed after their outright win over Assam. They are, however, not taking things lightly despite spotting chinks in Delhi’s armour. "Delhi's bowling looks a bit shaky, but they can't be taken lightly. We will need to be at our best to put it across them," said Tamil Nadu batting coach, PC Prakash. Even as the teams brace up, they would also be keeping an eye on the weather. It has been raining for the last few days and the skies threaten to open up again. The teams: Tamil Nadu: D. Karthik (captain), A. Mukund, S. Anirudha, K.B. Arun Karthik, S. Badrinath, R. Sathish, C. Ganapathy, R. Ashwin, R. Sutheesh, R. Aushik Srinivas, K. Shree Vasudeva Das, Sunil Sam, M. Prabhu, J. Kaushik; Batting coach: P.C. Prakash; Bowling coach: D.J. Gokulakrishnan; Fielding coach: T.S. Mohan. Delhi: Mithun Manhas (capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rajat Bhatia, Punit Bisht, Pradeep Sangwan, Parwinder Awana, Sumit Narwal, Pawan Suyal, Vikas Mishra, Chetan Sharma, Aditya Jain, Mayank Tehlan, Manoj Chauhan and Yogesh Nagar; Coach: Manoj Prabhakar .

UP eye full points at home against Orissa Uttar Pradesh's advantage this Ranji season is that five of their six matches in the league phase are at home. The draw too is relatively easy and getting to the knockout stages should not be difficult. Sharad Deep reports. More... UP eye full points at home against Orissa Sharad Deep, Hindustan Times Lucknow, November 10, 2010 Uttar Pradesh's advantage this Ranji season is that five of their six matches in the league phase are at home. The draw too is relatively easy and getting to the knockout stages should not be difficult. Among the three top teams in the Elite Group B, besides Karnataka and Baroda, Mohd Kaif and Co started well by managing three points against Punjab in their opening match last week. Up next is a relatively easy outing against Orissa at the Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta Stadium from Wednesday. The 22-yard strip bore a near bald look and a sudden change in climate on Tuesday forced the two sides to revisit their plans. "A final look at the pitch and weather conditions before the start will help us finalise the XI," said Kaif. "So far, we have done well on this track, but we hope to make a few changes for this match. We would like to exploit the home advantage but we aren't taking them lightly." Besides Suresh Raina, who is engaged in the Test series against New Zealand, UP will also miss the services of last match's man-of-the-match Praveen Kumar, who is nursing an elbow injury. He has been replaced by young speedster Imtiyaz Ahmed. Praveen's absence has also paved the way for left-arm seamer Shalabh Srivastava to make it to the XI. The third seamer would be Sudeep Tyagi, while leggie Piyush Chawla is expected to share the old ball with debutant Ashish Yadav, who has already cemented his place in the one-day and T20 squads. UP's batting would revolve around Tanmay Srivastava, Shivakant Shukla, Kaif and Parvinder. Orissa skipper, Shiv Sundar Das, too appeared confident of a good match, especially after his side managed three points against Baroda at Cuttack last week. "It was a great start, so we are hopeful. We plan to field the same XI but changes could be announced on the morrow."

Bengal takes on Mumbai as fresh wicket takes centre stage at Eden Gardens More... Bengal takes on Mumbai as fresh wicket takes centre stage at Eden Gardens Special Correspondent -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coach Raman and skipper Tiwary have brought about a change in Bengal's attitude Jaffer is in fine form with centuries in both innings against Saurashtra -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KOLKATA: Reigning champion Mumbai will take on Bengal in the Ranji Trophy Elite group ‘A' league match at the Eden Gardens here on Wednesday. The four-day match could be crucial for the host. Putting aside last year's abysmal showing, Bengal garnered three points against Delhi in the opening encounter to begin this season on a good note. Similarly, Mumbai had a good time against Saurashtra, picking up three points from the drawn encounter. Tough taskmaster New coach W.V. Raman and skipper Manoj Tiwary have brought in a massive change in Bengal's attitude, which was evident against Delhi. The tough task master that he is, Raman did not take much time to earn the respect of the boys. In this background, Wednesday's match is crucial for Bengal. Mumbai has always proved to be a tough opponent and playing the team so early in the tournament can prove two things. A good show will lift Bengal's confidence so much that it could progress into the knockout phase easily whereas a poor show could prove to be a set back. Bengal's batting looks brittle with only Arindam Das and Tiwary looking solid in the top-order. Rohan Banerjee and untested Writam Porel have been drafted in and both are likely to get a look in, in case the team management does not opt for Anustup Majumdar. The experienced Abhishek Jhunjhunwala can also be considered but he has not been in good form this season. Pitch The newly-laid wicket at the Eden Gardens, which will be used during the 2011 World Cup, will appear for its first test when Mumbai play Bengal in an Elite Group A Ranji Trophy game starting from Wednesday. If rival skippers were hoping to figure out how the pitch would behave there got precious little in terms of definitive answers. The Eden Gardens is being spruced up to meet the December 31 deadline by which time all stadia must be ready for the World Cup and the next few days will give an idea as to how the wicket will behave. Players had a mixed opinion after taking a close look at the wicket. Some believed that it would play low and slow but none will be surprised if it behaves slightly differently. "We have to play at least two first-class games on this wicket before the World Cup. So we have decided to host both our Ranji Trophy home matches here," Cricket Association of Bengal joint-secretary Biswarup Dey told The Indian Express on Wednesday. Mumbai skipper Wasim Jaffer, an experienced and decorated first class campaigner believes that it will be hard work for the batsmen at the Eden Gardens. "This is not a batsman's paradise. I think it will be a challenge to score runs on this wicket," Jaffer said on the eve of the game. Skipper Tiwary thinks the pitch is a typical Eden Garden wicket, slow and low as the match progresses but his counterpart Wasim Jaffer feels this pitch is a lot different from the one he has played in the past. Jaffer is in fine form with centuries in both innings against Saurashtra and Rohit Sharma, who hit 93 and 74 not out, is also in ominous touch. The inclusion of Ajinkya Rahane will certainly strengthen the batting. The Mumbai bowling will be spearheaded by veteran Ajit Agarkar. The wily Ramesh Powar and Abdulla will head the spin department making this Mumbai side one of the toughest to beat. For the home team, it will be an opportunity to build on their good work during the first round against Delhi where they walked away with three points after taking the first innings lead. Yet, taking on 39-time champions Mumbai will be a different ball game for the side which hopes to stay on the road to redemption under new coach WV Raman and young skipper Manoj Tiwary. Mumbai players are under a gag order after all-rounder Ramesh Powar had criticised the wicket after the last game at home against Saurashtra. The teams (from): Mumbai: Wasim Jaffer (Captain), Ajit Agarkar, Omkar Gurav, Iqbal Abdulla, Javed Khan, Dhawal Kulkarni, Sushant Marathe, Prashant Naik, Abhishek Nayar, Ramesh Powar, Ajinkya Rahane, Avishkar Salvi, Rohit Sharma, Praful Waghela and Vikrant Yeligati. Bengal: Manoj Tiwary (Captain), Wriddhiman Saha, Arindam Das, Shreevats Goswami, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Anustup Majumdar, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Writam Porel, Sourasish Lahiri, Ranadeb Bose, Ashok Dinda, Sami Ahmed, Shiv Sagar Singh, Arindam Ghosh and Rohan Banerjee .

Ranji trophy : Round II Punjab/Karnataka on Neo Cricket. Vinay Kumar won the toss and elected to bowl first. The pitch has a bit of grass and it should assist the bowlers early on. Dharmani said Mandeep has been released for some tournament and will not play today. Meanwhile, another u19 player, Rahul is making his debut for Karnataka. Vinay takes a wicket off the first delivery as Ravi Inder misjudges the line and tries to leave the ball but it strikes the timber. Mithun is also getting some bounce, seam, and movement early on. Conditions may ease out I think.

Railways looking to make amends against Assam They were on the mat for a major part of their drawn opener against Gujarat, but the Railways will look to capitalize on the lessons learnt as they take on a shaky Assam at the Karnail Singh Stadium from today. Shubhodeep Chakravarty reports. More... Railways looking to make amends against Assam Special Correspondent NEW DELHI: Kulamani Parida, warned by umpires last season that he was likely to be ‘called', has come back with a “modified action.” The veteran off-spinner's place in the Railways team for the Ranji Trophy Super League match against Assam from Wednesday at the Karnail Singh Stadium, however, remains uncertain. As per the laws in force this season, the on-field umpires have been vested with the power to ‘call' the bowler. Last year, the umpires could warn the bowler in advance, but not anymore. The Railway team management is positive that Parida, who has played 107 matches spanning 15 first-class seasons, qualifies, but it will find itself in a predicament if the umpires, S. Tarapore and S. Ravi, differ in opinion. Railways is not worried about the legality of Parida's action, but the effectiveness of it. Railways, with just one point against Gujarat's three in the last match, is looking to make amends in this contest. “We have not batted well at all and it is a concern,” said skipper Murali Kartik, who remains the motivation for his team. The Railways skipper would be justified in expecting the likes of Sanjay Bangar, Faiz Fazal, T.P. Singh, V. Cheluvaraj and Yere Goud to contribute handsomely with the bat. Spinner-friendly In contrast to the seaming track of the last match, Railways has opted for a spinner-friendly pitch and Assam was looking at including left-arm spinner Prakash Bhagat, yet to play a first-class match. Skipper Amol Muzumdar, with the experience of 152 first-class matches behind him and the crown of being the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy, expects a close contest. “Assam has lot of potential and we have to compete. For me it is a different role and challenge and I expect the team to make the most of the opportunities,” said Muzumdar. Assam relies on its batting a lot, which features the likes of left-handers Dheeraj Jadhav and S. Sriram at the top. Sriram struck early form with a 121 against Tamil Nadu, his parent team, in the last match. “If I can help Assam stay in the Elite group it will be great,” said Sriram, who figured in eight ODIs for India. The Railways' bowling will hinge on Krishnakant Upadhyay and Shailender Gehlot. The pace duo has shown the ability to chip away at wickets and will hope to bully its way through the Assam batting. Making the Elite Division for the first time since the 2004-05 season, Assam have not had the best of starts to their campaign, losing their opener to Tamil Nadu by seven wickets. Despite commendable knocks from S Sriram and Tarjinder Singh against Tamil Nadu, the age-old problem of a tottering middle order persists and it can be an invitation to the hosts to move in for the kill. Nonetheless, it will be a contest where both sides will look to slay the demons within rather than test the might of each other.

Punjab ready for Karnataka pacers as visitors have onus on the young turks Punjab need to make the most of their only home game this season. They face last year's runners-up Karnataka at the PCA Stadium here. Ashutosh Sharma reports. More... A battle between equals Special Correspondent -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Medium-pacers expected to hold key to the match -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOHALI: Last season, Karnataka rediscovered itself under Rahul Dravid. Exciting talents like Abhimanyu Mithun and Manish Pandey used the National championship to showcase their prowess. Some consistent performances added to the confidence and the team almost went all the way. Notwithstanding the six-run loss to Mumbai in the final, it was a season of gains for the former champion. This year, under the hard-working Vinay Kumar, the side is looking to do one better. Last season A set of fresh limbs had propelled Karnataka to the Ranji Trophy final in the 2009-2010 season and now they have the envious task of carrying the State one step ahead. Last year was momentous for Karnataka in every sense of the word with a clutch of youngsters embossing their mark in emphatic fashion. Pacer Abhimanyu Mithun donned India colours after taking the highest number of wickets in the Ranji season. His senior colleague R Vinay Kumar too went on to play for India after a long wait while young batsmen like Manish Pandey, KB Pawan, Ganesh Satish and Amit Verma underscored their scoring abilities under various conditions and against different opponents. Now, they will have to prove that their excellent outing in the last season was not a mere flash in the pan and given their talent and current form there’s no reason why they can’t do an encore. Karnataka are placed in Super League Group B along with Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa and Baroda. Vinay, who will lead the team in the first two matches in the absence of former India skipper and the original choice to lead the side Rahul Dravid, sounded confident of another Karnataka surge. Dravid will join the squad after the on-going Test series against New Zealand. “The team did extremely well last season and we want to continue the good work. Mithun, Arvind and I bowled well in tandem and among the batsmen Manish and Ganesh had a good stint. Robin also had a few good knocks. Yes, there will be the pressure of expectations because of the way we played last season. But I have conveyed to the team that we need to enjoy our game and not put any undue pressure on ourselves,” Vinay said. Mysore all-rounder Aditya Sagar and talented right-hander KL Rahul will be the two new faces in the 15-member squad to be coached by K Sanath Kumar. “Rahul is a talented batsman and he has come up very well through the age-group tournaments. The team is young and compact and there is good spirit among the players and we are all keen to start our Ranji season well,” Vinay said with the confidence ringing in his voice. Starting its Ranji Trophy campaign against Punjab at the PCA Stadium here on Wednesday, Karnataka boasts of almost the same side that played the final at Mysore. “Many of our players were noticed and made it to various teams (chosen by the National selectors). Our confidence is high and we hope to have another great season,” said Vinay. Mithun eyes rich haul for comeback Abhimanyu Mithun is back to playing for Karnataka. Last season he picked up 47 wickets in his debut year and caught the eye of the selectors. He played Tests in Sri Lanka and gave a good account of himself. Now, begins his true test. Batsmen would have studied him closely and must have found ways and means of not losing their wicket to the 21-year-old medium pacer. On the eve of the Elite Group B game against Punjab in Mohali, Mithun spoke about how he wanted to increase his tally of wickets this season. "It was very challenging to make a mark in Ranji Trophy. It was my first season but I am happy that I was successful. The icing on the cake would have been if we had beaten Mumbai in the final. This season I want to take more than 47 wickets," Mithun told The Indian Express. After playing three Tests, Mithun has figured out the the areas he needs to improve. "I need to add much more variation. I have worked on developing different kinds of deliveries and am looking forward to using them during this Ranji season," the Karnataka bowler added. Mithun hopes another good season will once again earn him a place in the India team. "I am eager to play for India again. I don't know if I can make the cut for the tour of South Africa but I am keeping my fingers crossed," he said. Mithun knows that he'll have to vie for a place in the India side with team-mate R Vinay Kumar who has played in the shorter formats for India. For now, he is focussed on teaming up with his skipper and bagging wickets by the dozen. Green tinge Mithun, who got a taste of international cricket in his sensational debut season, must be wondering how easily his tremendous run has been almost forgotten. Along with Vinay and left-arm pacer S. Aravind, he would certainly be eager to exploit the seamer-friendly conditions with the pitch here having a green look. Punjab, aware of Karnataka's strengths, is willing to take a chance to gain maximum out of its only home game. “I expect my bowlers to get 20 wickets on this pitch,” said Punjab coach and former National selector Bhupinder Singh. “Obviously, we know more about this pitch and the conditions here. But, I still think it is a match between equals,” said Bhupinder. Adding muscle Yuvraj Singh's presence adds muscle to Punjab's middle-order. After being woefully out of form in all forms of the game for the better part of the year, the left-hander came up with an impressive half-century last week against Uttar Pradesh. Yuvraj is keen to get back into the Test team. Though Punjab's batting looks reasonably strong under seasoned campaigner Pankaj Dharmani, fresh from a match-saving century last week, the finger injury to medium-pacer Love Ablish is a bit of a concern. With Ablish out of action for at least 10 days, Manpreet Gony will get a chance. Two other medium-pacers will be chosen from Harmeet Singh, Bharat Loomba and newcomer Navdeep Sidhu. Last season, Karnataka prevailed over Punjab in the quarterfinals by virtue of the first innings lead. The side which handles the medium-pacers better should emerge on top here. Despite this, Pankaj Dharmani looked optimistic and counted on home advantage. "Karnataka's strength lies in its bowling. But we have the batsmen who can perform well in conditions that assist fast bowling. It is going to be a tough contest but I think they might miss the experience of Rahul Dravid," he said. The visitors might have to rely on youngsters once again.

Why did P.Dharmani send Harmeet Singh in? In the first session of play? And the guy was naturally clueless against Vinay Kumar. Did the punjabi batsmen chicken out seeing the movement from the bowlers? He perhaps wanted Harmeet Singh to block a few overs and the ball may get old!?? :dontknow: Anyway, Yuvi had to come out as Harmeet left after 1 ball! Even the commentators are talking abt that. Why was Harmeet Singh sent in to bat? Harmeet is no allrounder, he is just a trundler bowler at best.
