Ponting was Tendulkarly for a brief period between 2002 and 2006, and the way he scored in those years, (avg shot up from 50 to 60), and Tendulkar looking "mortal", there were a lot of people who were prophesying it was only a matter of time before Ponting overtook Sachin...

Just caught the HL... it's amazing the way he completely negated the Aussie attack with a few simple but brilliant moves.. just like a great chessmaster who waits to understand his opponent's plan and scythes through those with a cunning counter plan... A few notes: 1. As in the last 3 years, Sachin has perfected the art of optimising energy output by adopting economy, be that in case of body movements, emotions, strokes, etc. No longer we see extravagant feet movement, swordish bat swings or "for the camera" follow throughs.. he sees the balls, applies enough pressure on it with his willow to get it precisely where he wants, not a yard less, not a yard more... 2. Accordingly, the shots that he used most were a. To Hauritz and spinners - Pitched up - outside off stump - Cover drive Pitched up - middle stump & leg stump - slog sweeps b. Pacemen - pitched up on stumps- on drive & flick short pitched - leave, till Ponting brought in fielders from fence, when he started playing the pull.... Amazing how he never looked violent as like a Sehwag or a Lara, yet controlled the entire game like a puppeteer, subtly but comprehensively... Awesome!! A lesson in playing test cricket indeed...
