Life convict wishes to marry, writes to MPHRC A 35-year-old convict undergoing life imprisonment has urged Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) to help him getting married. In a letter to MPHRC, Vijay Gyanchand has asked to search a match for him. "We have forwarded Gyanchand's letter to the MPHRC office based in Bhopal," Indore Central Jail Superintendent Purshottam Somkunwar told PTI. He said that Gyanchand was in the jail since a long time and his term was coming to an end in two years. In his letter, Gyanchand has said that he could not marry because his family condition was not good. "I am 35-year-old and if I don't get married now, no girl will marry me," he said. "I want to live a happy married life after my release from the jail. I want to command respect in the society," the letter said. "We want that Gyanchand's wish should be accomplished," Somkunwar said. "The NGOs should come forward and help him in entering into wedlock, so that he lives like a commoner after his release from the jail," he said.

18 drowned in trawler capsize in Bengal river 18 drowned in trawler capsize in Bengal river Eighteen people, 15 women and 3 girl children, were drowned and many were missing when an overcrowded trawler carrying about 100 pilgrims capsized in Hoogly river at Talpatti island in East Midnapore district on Saturday. One of the rescued is a girl of about nine years who was floating in the water. The trawler was among three returning from Hijli Sharif. Five bodies have been identified so far and all of them hailed from Kakdwip. The boatsmen of the ill-fated boat are yet to be traced. Rescue operations were carried out by the Navy, Coastguard, Natioanl Disaster Rescue Force and Civil Defence, he said. Those rescued were rushed to Kakdwip block hospital, he said. The rescue operations has been called off for the night, District Magistrate N S Nigam said adding the help of army helicopters would be sought on Sunday. Designed in the US, Big Harley readies to roll out from Haryana

The company has not specified the production capacity or the investment that the plant entails. This would be the company’s second facility outside the US. After setting up the dealer network, it would start assembling bikes by importing CKD kits. Harley-Davidson India imports completely assembled motorcycles from its US final-assembly plants. “Harley-Davidson is moving forward with the launch of operations in India to assemble motorcycles for the Indian market from the component kits supplied by its US plants. It expects the facility to be operational in the first half of 2011,†a statement added. After the Haryana facility is operational, the company will import CKD kits for select models from the company's US plants and employees at the Haryana facility will then assemble the components into finished motorcycles. All other models will continue to be imported as completely built motorcycles for now. Harley-Davidson India commenced operations in August 2009 and offers 12 models in its 2010 line-up in India. Meanwhile, AT&T India has won a three-year contract from Harley-Davidson to provide network capabilities to sites in India, allowing Harley-Davidson’s employees in India to effectively and timely communicate with their counterparts in the US. AT&T India will also provide Harley-Davidson with network integration consulting, equipment procurement, staging, configuration, deployment and staff augmentation pertaining to building the communications network for the new sites in India.

Leopard kills boy A leopard on the prowl in the Chulah, Sakrohi, Badsu area near here took away and killed 7-year-old boy Sagar Pratap, who studied in class II in Government Primary School, Gutkar, yesterday. After the night-long hunt, the boy’s body was recovered from the nearby bushes today. As a result of this third leopard attack in the belt, fear stalks Pathar and other nearby villages in Chulah, Sakrohi and Badasu in Mandi Sadar area. Manipur’s ‘Iron Lady’ completes 10 yrs of fasting The civil society organisations in Manipur have organised protests in different parts of the state to reassure solidarity with civil rights activist Irom Sharmila - “Iron Lady” of Manipur. Sharmila has completed 10 years of fast-unto-death on Tuesday, demanding withdrawal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958, from Manipur to save innocent people from harassment in the conflict between the security forces and militants. Sharmila began her trade against AFSPA 10 years ago after 10 civilians were killed in an alleged encounter by the Assam Rifles personnel near Imphal airport. A room in Imphal’s Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital where she is being fed through the nose has been converted into a jail for Sharmila, now in judicial custody. Sharmila’s brother and convener of the Just Peace Foundation (JPF), Imphal, Singhjit Singh said a public would be organised on November 5 in solidarity with Sharmila’s tirade. The JPF-led civil society groups programme has been christened ‘The festival of hope, justice and peace’. Various theatre groups from Manipur and outside the state would stage performance to highlight the demand for repeal of the AFSPA. Singhjit Singh further stated that many artistes led by eminent film maker Aribam Shyam Sharma staged a day-long fast in Imphal yesterday to mark the beginning of the six-day programme in support of Sharmila’s unrelenting campaign. Besides film personalities, a horde of eminent singers, actors and technicians also joined the demonstration organised under the aegis of the Thangmeiband United Art and Culture Organisation.
