I want to continue doing that because I've worked very hard the last couple of years on my batting. Gary Kirsten [the former South Africa batsman who now coaches India] has been instrumental in this. He's given me the freedom to express myself, and to pace my innings as I see fit

He is just having digs at Chappell who ruined the team atmosphere. Kirsten has not been around for last 21 years and sachin has murdered everyone. Just he has not annoyed sachin and has given him plenty of throw downs. Sachin does not need coaching.

But that was earlier in the year and, who knows, a far better deal (not just financially) may actually make him reconsider. Much, clearly, is going to depend on India’s performance in the World Cup. It wouldn’t really be fair to judge an individual on the basis of one tournament/ series, but the BCCI had the quadrennial World Cup in mind when it signed on Kirsten. Where results go, at the top of the Kirsten-list is helping India become No.1 in Test cricket. His biggest achievement, though, has been off the field: Allowing some of the sport’s biggest names enough space to be in their own zone, yet bonding in the manner of good teams. It’s unusual for Kirsten to be caught in a winning-frame, for he believes that the players alone deserve kudos and he shouldn’t be seen as trying to take even a part of the credit. The story, however, doesn’t end there — the Sachin Tendulkars want the kudos going his way, too. It’s a massive change from the Chappell years.

Tendulkar has sung paens on Kirsten's coaching... bcoz he treats players like they want to be... see Tendulkar has seen 21 years and several generations of players, and Kirsten is frankly NOT qualified to advise him on technique or anything... Kirsten fully understands that fact and concentrates more on prepping up/motivating seniors like him... IN the latest Guardian interview Tendulkar says that "He is a great friend... rather than a great coach... and gives me freedom to express myself". Great endorsement that... coming from the most qualified person on the planet to comment on such things... Kirsten is IN demand, but unless he wants to leave India (which I don't think he'll be in a hurry to), he will stay as our coach.. primarily because the players love him... he is not an egoistic dictatorial bag like Chappell....

NEW DELHI: Prolific Indian opener Gautam Gambhir feels that the Indian Cricket Board should renew the contract of coach Gary Kirsten after it expires at the end of the World Cup next year. "Gary is the best coach India has ever had. I have often said that and I keep on stressing that we need Gary. I don't need to speak much about him. His fabulous record speaks for itself. He has been a great man-manager. So I believe that he should be retained after the World Cup also," Gambhir said at the sidelines of a promotional event. Gambhir is thus the latest among the Indian stars to join the bandwagon who want the South African to be retained as Cricket South Africa wants him to take over once he finishes his stint with the Indian team.

He's gonna be pulled up for talking about which, according to the board, he is not supposed to talk. But he's right on the money. I think Gary is a better Man-manager than a Coach. He gives every player the creative freedom he needs and the results show. Greg on the other hand would ask the players to bend backwards, dig inwards and come up with rich returns consistently. Both Greg and Gary have excellent coaching skills. But Gary is the better diplomat.

players at this level usually need little coaching... perhaps a few tweaks here and there but generally leave the technical aspects to specialised coaches... that's why in foot ball they call em managers.. Kirsten is perhaps the best Man manager going around...
