Re: These Poms are NUTS... ^^ really nuts. the curry is going to be in a dry pack and sealed up, and then heated up and served in Perth. 24-hr stale, dried, reconstituted curry for 1500 quid. wow!! it woulda been cheaper and better to get fresher curry flown in from IND to the antipodes. Re: These Poms are NUTS... Rahul, I am not sure if you saw a recent article on TIME I beleive it was about top selection of cuisines from around the world. Indian cuisine managed to make it but to my shock the city with best Indian food shown was London! The article did mention that Indians in general dont eat much outside of home in India and hence the typical Indian restaurant in India are hardly great anyways(fair point in my opinion) while those in London score on good dish along with the presentation, ambience of restaurant and so on(again fair in my opinion). I must say some of the best Indian dishes(in a restaurant) was those I had in London. This comes after living in Bombay for the quite a few years and spending the better part of the decade in USA. I am convinced that most Indian restaurants here are cr@p in USA. For one(and no offence meant to anyone here), most of these are either run by South Indian friends or Gujratis. That in itself is not bad obviously but you can detect the influence on cooking. Its hard to pick a lip smacking Chicken dopyaaza Mughlai style in a South Indian influenced restaurant. If you are a connoisuer of typical North Indian food, like I am, - chole bathure, sheesh kebab, Peshawari Naan, Chicken Dum pukht you would more often than not run into that issue(if you manage to find them on the menu that is). Unless of you course you are in LA or New York and then you dont have such a problem. Personally I think English-Indian restaurant are generally good, perhaps because of all those Sikhs that went there first? xxx PS: Agree with that 24 hour stale comment of yours though.

Re: These Poms are NUTS... ^^ Lurker, are you referring to the "baalti"s in London?? they are usually run by non-Indians of Bangladeshi origin. yeah, they are pretty good as well, but I usually never eat Indian food outside, since it always pales to what my wife can conjure up. and re: yr observation on desi restaurants in US, my expy has been exactly the opposite. all "indian restaurants" offer only punjabi/north indian cuisine. it's very hard to find a decent place to get a good chicken chettinad or fish fry or stuff like that. i found one Mallu restaurant outside Philly, but it was rather too dinghy and decrepit for my liking. i found a nice place in my neck o' the woods called Amma's kitchen, in georgetown. very reasonable, very good veggie south indian food. of course, edison, NJ prolly has the best collection concentrated in the same area. take it easy, R

I am a restaurant-freak and i can tell u, 99% of indian restaurants in US serves the same punjabi dishes...u can hardly find good south indian or gujju or other ethnic foods other than the moghlai and punjabi gravy types... edison is very good, and some in the LA and maryland/DC area are not too bad either....
