The Indian national football team suffered a humiliating 1-9 defeat at the hands of Kuwait in an international friendly match played as part of preparations for next next year's Asian Cup, in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. The Indians, who were preparing in the UAE for the January 7-29 AFC Asian Cup in Doha, were completely outplayed by the West Asians who pumped in three goals in the opening half and went on to score six more in the second session. Al Qadsia striker Bader Al Mutawa struck four times (25th, 55th, 66th and 90th) while Yousef Naser Al Sulaiman (20th), Jarah Al Ataiqi (29th, penalty), Fahad Al Enezi (51st), Khaled Khalaf (56th) Hammad Naif Al Enezi (75th) found the target once each as the Kuwaitis scored goals almost at will at the Al-Wahda Stadium. Mohammed Rafi [ Images ] scored a consolation goal for India [ Images ] in the 69th minute. The heavy defeat will surely affect the morale of Bob Houghton's boys as they had also lost 0-2 to Asian champions Iraq on November 11. They now take on UAE in their final international friendly of the month on November 18. Before the match though, the Indians were boosted by the arrival of Celtic player Michael Chopra who had evinced interest in playing for the national team. Team sources said Chopra, the ex-Sunderland player, met Houghton on Sunday along with his agents to discuss any possibility of his donning India colours in future. Chopra's grandparents were born in India and under FIFA [ Images ] rules he can play for India. But the hurdle could be the Indian government's policy that only its citizens can represent the country and any Person of Indian Origin will have to surrender the passport of the other country. A few years back, the All India Football Federation had mulled on allowing PIOs to play for the country but later dropped the idea as the matter was found to be too complicated. http://www.rediff.com/sports/report/kuwait-thump-india-1-9-in-football-friendly/20101115.htm

Indian strategy : "Long ball..hope for the best ". We badly need the European football culture injected. And wow!! Michael Chopra ??!!..that would be a quantum leap for Indian football POI inclusion would be a good move.. quite a few Indian-origin players plying their trade in age-group sides in top European clubs http://ibnlive.in.com/news/soccer-club-chelsea-net-3-youngsters-of-indian-origin/92028-5.html there is also Harpal Singh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpal_Singh These guys are not going to be able to turn up for their respective national sides.. but they would be a significant add to the current quality in our set-up

What a shame! We have 1 billion people!
Case Study:Philllipines team ...used be crappier than ours.. then they relaxed their citizenship rule..all the half-filipinos like YoungHusband brothers (ex-Chelsea youth) and Etheridge (Fulham GK) started representing them...they look like a borderline good team in Asia now... in the Semi's so far now in the South East Asian tournament. don't bother about the population count and all... we do squat in the olympics compared to China...no need of false pride anymore..lets try to qualify for the goddamn WC in atleast 8 years

corrected. With the current state of Indian football, I don't think we can hope for anything before World cup 2026 or 2030. Interest in football in India is like a sleeping dragon - it wakes up for the world cup, then sleeps for 2 years, again wakes up after 2 years for the Euro cup, goes to sleep and then again wakes up for the World Cup..... I think the biggest problem behind lack of interest in Indian Domestic football is the perception of the people that international level of sport is the highest level there is (this may be due to the fact that in cricket - the most popular sport, the international level is the highest and best level and the club level is quite mediocre, so people here tend to think the same holds true for football) while in football its the club level which is much better. This trend is slowly changing but we've got a long, long road ahead.

what india needs is a Gavaskar,Kapil of football to arrive at the scene... our biggest football idols so far have been butia and chettri..who are unfortunately discards from league II English team and MLS sides respectivey... we need someone much much bigger to arrive in the scene.. someone to wake the sleeping giant forever like what Gavaskar and Kapil did to cricket in our country.. I only see indian-origin players like Dhorasoo who can do the magic... the Tendulkars and Dravids will later arrive from our 1b people... either that or Pak should get really good at football... ;-)
