People in India are obsessed with the game cricket and when the stars of Indian cricket step on the field, be sure the whole nation will be glued to the television set like true followers. The knock-out clash between India and Australia in the quarterfinals, which saw India advancing through the semifinals, remained the winner among all the previous matches in terms of TRPs. According to aMap, the India Australia match garnered a peak rating of 10.10 and average rating of 6.53 with 53 million viewers glued to the television sets for an average of 115 minutes per viewer. Popular TV serials like Pavitra Rishtra and Balika Vadhu, telecast by General Entertainment Channels garner a rating of 3.8 on an average and even the opening of KBC 4 just touched a rating of 5. But clearly with Rs. 2000 crore riding on the World Cup 2011, sponsors and advertisers have a reason to cheer. "When India wins, sponsors have the biggest smile and so do advertisers who have invested so much on the World Cup. With India performing well, it has been a great investment on the world cup." The cricket World Cup has been watched by more than 160 million viewers till date that's more than the viewership that IPL 3 got with 143.7 million viewers. And the broadcaster and sponsors are glad to get the bang for their buck. "The fact is that I can just not stop smiling. The ratings in this world cup have been terrific…Great stuff really," said Aloke Malik, MD of ESPN. Not only advertisers, the whole of India is waiting for the next outing of the men in blue to break yet another record. http://profit.ndtv.com/news/show/india-australia-match-draws-record-viewership-146362

And this doesn't even count the huge number of people who watch the match outside of TV showroom. In my area there are 3 electronics showrooms, where at least 60 people were standing in front of each shop

I think this was after a very, very long time that I actually saw the roads were empty at the time of the match. In my college, along with the students, some of the teachers were also absent or going home home early :giggle:

Yesterday I was dropped home by cab at around 7:30 PM at my home. turns out the cab driver didnt go back to office but was hanging around till 10:30 PM outside a Girias (electroncs showroom) shop near my home watching the match with 50-60 odd people. Only cricket can make people lose track of time and hunger in India.
