Thoughts on World T20?

I've noticed that before the 50 over World Cup, our boys had 2 gold stars on their Jerseys. This was changed to 1 for the World Cup. Now that we've won the World Cup, I hear we will have 3 stars. I don't agree with this. When we won the inaugral World T20, we were under the impression it would be every 4 years, and it was a major thing. Now it's held nearly every year, making it possible for almost anyone to win it. Also, it can be fluked, whereas 50 overs+ requires serious cricketing skill. I don't think the World T20 is worthy of being classed as a proper World Cup, even the Champions Trophy holds more prestige. Agree?/Disagree?

That makes sense' date=' but I still feel that by having 3 stars on our shirt, we cheapen the 2 that count. The 2 that make your username^[/quote'] How much star Australia have ?

T20 World cup or World T20=same thing. How is it not a world cup when all the cricket playing nations participate in it and its played under the ICC.It might not hold the same value as a 50 over world cup but to say its not a world cup because it happens every two years is simply absurd. So many of great sporting events are held every years does not mean they lose their value.Look at UEFA Champions League,World snooker championship,Tennis slams they all take place every year.

So Champions trophy is also a World cup because every nation plays in it. And so India also won World cup in 1985 because in World championship series every nation participate in it.

It is a World Cup of sorts, but lacks prestige due to it's frequency. My point is that having a star on the India shirt for our 2007 win, seems to cheapen the 2 stars we have for our proper World Cup wins. As for the Champions League, that's club football, not international level, where all major tournaments are every 4 years too. Tennis/Snooker are played by individuals, so again a different scenario...

I don't think they do the star thing yet. India have pioneered it in Cricket. It's usually a football tradition. Obviously Australia would have 4 stars for their 4 World Cups (they've not won a World T20 yet)...

CoB, welcome back! I agree that T20 world cup is not quite prestigious. No, not because of its frequency, but rather because of the skill required to win it. The longer the format the less chance of teams fluking it. In an ODI, you could come back from a set back. You still have role for an innings builder, a leg spinner and a swing bowler. Little cameos can change a game, but are not enough by themselves to win it. Five good overs is enough to win a T20. Even a Pakistan or WI is good enough to win it. Not a world cup in my books.

Even a Pakistan??? Is this the same Pakistan who just made it to the semis and were only knocked out by the best team in the competition?

I don't care about the World T20. Wouldn't be bothered if we get knocked out in the first round. The aim should be the two big test series- Eng and Aus (WI as well although they're pretty mediocre). Consolidating the number 1 ranking is the most important thing.

by "even a Pakistan" he means an unpredictable team and Pakistan is one of the most unpredictable teams around.

because it happens every 1-2 years it should be called the World T20 championship or something like that. World cups should be 3-4 years apart.

T-20 can be won by any team. Hardly requires concentration and skills. Anyone who can swing the bat and connect well a few times can become a match winner within space of couple of overs.eg a Kieron Pollard or Umar Akmal are 2 players who come to mind In similar manner bowlers usually get more wickets than their actual skill because of compulsion of batsmen to take risk. Temperament, patience and building an innings are core attractions of cricket and in T20 there is no time for that. So no T20 is not even close to 50 over ODI. This I have said even before India won the World cup. Furthermore T-20 should be held every 3 years if not 4 years or else it will loose its glamour.
