If a club wants to cut loose a player in the middle of the season or after the 1st or 2nd season, do they still owe the player the full money? That is, if they get the player for $1 million in auction and cut him after the 1st season, do they have to pay the player all $3 million?

That is called player buyout. That will depend between that play & the franchise he plays for. eg....as above..that player bought for $1mil for 3 year....ie total $3mil. The player plays for the 1st year....so the fanchise pays to that play $1 mil. From the 2nd year onward...the franchise dont want that player. so they can negotite with the player...that they dont want him in the team...& for year 2 & 3...but they are still willing to pay him $1 mil to get out of the contract they sign with the player. if the player agrees...they player get money. the franchise can then buy another player...whereas that player can sell his services to another willing franchise.
