Just for the League phases - taking 20,000 as conservative estimate per match for 70 matches comes to a figure of 1.4 Million people attending the matches (my guess would be this number could be closer to 2 Million). At an average rate of Rs. 300 this comes to nearly 10 Million USD revenues just from the gate tickets. we have not started talking about Advertising revenues yet. My point is that this itself makes it a big event by itself and if you add TV viewership it pretty much seals it that IPL is not going anywhere and its popularity will be tough to match. There may be some hiccups in between and some of the franchises may run out of money - obviously the business models will get refined but there will always be someone interested to invest money into IPL.

You can easily see bunch of empty seats in the stadiums and even most of the folks who show up are mostly "free loaders" as franchises are giving away tickets just to have ppl in the stands.

In whole scheme of things of IPL this 10 mn dollars (if that amount is correct) looks very paltry amount. Single franchise spends alomost same on picking their players only. Not that I disagree with you, but trying to say that 10mn amount doesn't prove or disprove anything.
