Group A A powerful all-round performance from Samiullah Shenwari led Afghanistan to their fifth consecutive victory in the UAE, beating Canada by 41 runs. Afghanistan had slipped from 52 for 0 to 53 for 3, losing three wickets in the eighth over to Zahid Hussain, before Shenwari began his counterattack. He blitzed 61 off 34 balls, hitting three sixes, to lift his team to 174 for 8 in 20 overs. Shenwari then bowled economically and incisively, taking 4 for 14 to limit Canada to 133 for 9. Nitish Kumar top scored with 38 off 34 deliveries, but Canada fell a long way short of their target despite benefitting from 21 extras. Nepal drew level with Canada on six points in Group A but were in fourth place on net run-rate after their 24-run win against Bermuda. Paras Khadka, the Nepal captain, made an unbeaten 65 off 48 balls to lead his team to 151 for 6. He was supported by Sharad Vesawkar, who made 44. Dion Stovell was Bermuda's best bowler, taking 4 for 25 in his four-over spell. Bermuda were restricted to 127 for 5 in their reply, an innings that included 20 extras. Janeiro Tucker (32) was the only batsman to make more than 30. Shakti Gauchan took 3 for 17 in four overs for Nepal. A commanding batting performance from Netherlands helped them ease to a nine-wicket win against Papua New Guinea (PNG), with all of 20 balls to spare. PNG chose to bat and got to 140 for 7 chiefly due to a partnership of 95 for the third-wicket between Tony Ura and Chris Amini. The opener Ura top scored with 70, while captain Peter Borren was the most effective of the Netherlands bowlers, claiming three wickets with his medium-pace. Chasing 141, the Netherlands openers settled in, scoring 96 in 11 overs to all but seal the match. Stephan Myburgh and Michael Swart scored half centuries each, as Netherlands breezed home in the 17th over. Irfan Ahmed scored an unbeaten 91 to set up Hong Kong's 35-run win against Denmark. Irfan justified Hong Kong's decision to bat, knocking around 91 from 60 and batting through the innings. As a result, Hong Kong put on 170 for 5, despite legspinner Bobby Chawla picking up three wickets in a tidy spell. In the chase, no one could score more than Aftab Ahmed's 39, with Kinchit Shah knocking over middle order batsmen regularly with his offspin. Shah finished with 4 for 21, as Denmark managed only 135 for 9 in their 20. Group B A career best Twenty20 performance from Louis Klazinga helped Namibia beat Kenya by seven wickets and maintain their perfect record in the ICC World T20 qualifiers. Klazinga rocked Kenya with a spell of 3-1-9-4, precipitating a collapse that saw Kenya crumble from 84 for 1 to 108 all out. Raymond van Schoor led Namibia's chase with 49 from 48 balls, as they won their fifth straight game with 3.3 overs to spare. Duncan Allan and Collins Obuya were coasting along, having added 71 in 9.3 overs when Klazinga was handed the ball. The way he started gave no indication of what was to come, as the batsman milked six runs from his first five deliveries, which included a wide. However, he trapped Obuya leg before with his fifth legal delivery to trigger panic in Kenya's ranks. Tanmay Mishra and Ragheb Aga were snapped up in his second over while Rakep Patel was stumped in his third over. Christi Viljoen then joined taking party, taking 2 for 5 in 1.4 overs as the rest of Kenya's line-up succumbed meekly. Another solid performance from van Schoor at the top of the order took Namibia home and kept them in first place in Group B, two points ahead of Ireland. In a match that pitted two winless teams against each other, the USA bowlers managed to limit Oman and give their team their first victory, by 30 runs, in five games. USA chose to bat, and were steered through most of their innings by captain Sushil Nadkarni. Nadkarni scored 59 off 47, and with a few others contributing cameos, USA were propelled to 141 for 7. In reply, none of the Oman batsmen could quite get going and apart from a second-wicket stand of 54 between Vaibhav Wategaonkar and Adnan Ilyas, there was no resistance. Medium-pacer Japen Patel was the most incisive for USA, taking three wickets as Oman were restricted to 111 for 7. Italy, led by fast bowler Gareth Berg, stifled Uganda to register a 13-run victory. Italy were inserted and, driven by cameos from their middle order, got to 131 for 7. Damian Crowley top scored with 44. In the chase, Berg did much of the damage in a tidy spell, taking 4 for 20 in 3.4 overs. There were also three run outs, as Uganda folded for 118 to hand Italy the match.

Since when did Nitish Kumar start playing cricket and that too for Canada. I thought only Laloo's son played cricket and that too never made it to any good team even after his dad's backing. :--D BTW well done Afghanistan. Interesting to see Ireland not leading the other group. Namibia seems to be making a good entry into cricket. Ireland and Afghanistan are the dominating associate teams and so, it is interesting to see Namibia doing well against them.

Namibian players (like the white Zimbok players use to have) also have access to South African domestic system, so probably expect to see more of them in future world cups. I think Namibia enter as a first class team in South Africa's domestc one-day and t20 tournaments. It's shame the likes of Pakistan and India don't do much to help develop Afghanistan and Nepalese cricket like that.

Ireland in playoffs after massive win

Ireland trounced Uganda by 82 runs in Dubai to put them in the playoff stages of the World Cup qualifiers. The victory margin matches Ireland's best in terms of runs, achieved in its first ever Twenty20 game, against Bangladesh A in 2008. It was a game Ireland dominated from the start, with loose Uganda bowling allowing William Porterfield and Paul Stirling to race away with a stand of 78 off 7.2 overs, setting up a huge total of 179. Uganda never threatened to chase that and were bowled out in the final over. Stirling, who has had a quiet tournament, was relieved to tee off in this compact, club-style ground complete with picket fences. Deusdedit Muhumuza's first over went for 21, and a second six was comically spilled by an Irish fan over the long-on boundary. He tried the shot once too often, and his hoick off the captain Davis Arinaitwe was held in the outfield by Arthur Kyobe. Ed Joyce didn't stay long but Gary Wilson kept Porterfield company for five overs. Porterfield made his second fifty of the week - off 39 balls - before Frank Nsubuga trapped him in front. Ireland's rate slowed down as the boundaries dried up, hitting just two fours between the 7th and 17th overs, but the following over was a blaze. Twenty-eight runs flowed, mostly from the bat of Kevin O'Brien, who hit two fours and a six. Asadu Seiga delivered three no-balls, one of which was hit to the boundary. Wilson and Trent Johnston fell in the next over, but O'Brien hit a stunning jab for six over mid- on and then bisected the gap at square-leg to give Ireland its second highest-total in Twenty20 cricket. Needing nine an over, Uganda went for their shots early, and lost Kyobe to Johnston's third delivery and Nsubuga to his eighth. In the absence of John Mooney and Alex Cusack, Porterfield took the cue to give his fringe bowlers a spell. O'Brien picked up two more wickets and Nigel Jones bowled four tight overs for the scalp of Muhumuza. Wickets continued to fall steadily, with the best of the lot coming when Joyce made a spectacular one-handed diving catch to dismiss Charles Waiswa off Andrew White. Ronald Ssemanda and Seiga tried to biff a few off the spinners as the run-rate climbed ludicrously, but George Dockrell was rewarded for his perseverance with two wickets in the final over as Uganda was bowled out for 97. O'Brien was named the Man of the Match for his 39 off 20 balls, and two wickets. "It's always nice to be there at the end hitting a few runs," O'Brien said. "We're performing well in all departments now, with the batters all coming into form and the opening bowlers firing at the top of the innings." With Namibia continuing to win, Ireland may have to "do it the hard way" if they want to qualify for the finals in Sri Lanka. "We have to win every game, but that's what we planned to do when we came out here," O'Brien said. Coach Phil Simmons also revealed why he called up Andrew Poynter to replace Mooney, who flies home tomorrow with a torn hamstring that will sideline him for six to ten weeks. "I thought about bringing Tim Murtagh but we've got seven or eight bowlers here and they're all doing their jobs. With Alex Cusack out for the next four days too, we have no batting cover so I think Andrew is the best call," Simmons said.

Afghanistan storm into knockout phase

Group A Dawlat Zadran's five-wicket haul helped Afghanistan demolish Hong Kong by nine wickets in Sharjah and confirm their place in the knockout rounds. Zadran took 5 for 14, and along with Izatullah Dawlatzai, who took 2 for 19, dismantled Hong Kong's batting line-up with only two batsmen getting into double figures. Irfan Ahmed scored 54 off 52 balls to provide some respectability to the total as Hong Kong finished on 103. Afghanistan's opener Karim Sadiq did not waste any time as he hit 20 runs off the first over during the chase. After Sadiq's dismissal for 22, Javed Ahmadi's 38 and Mohammad Shahzad's 43 prevented any further damage and finished the game in the 12th over. In another low-scoring game, Netherlands beat Nepal by six wickets in Dubai, also sealing a berth in the knockouts. Nepal, who were put in to bat, had no answers to Netherlands' bowling as they were reduced to 25 for 5 after 11 overs. Michael Swart took 2 for 13 and Mudassar Bukhari took 1 for 9 to stifle Nepal. That was followed by similar spells by other bowlers as only one boundary was hit in the first 17 overs. Some frantic shots by Gyanendra Malla, who scored 32, and Basanta Regmi took Nepal to 85. While chasing, Netherlands lost four wickets, three of them to Regmi, but maintained a healthy scoring-rate to win the game inside 14 overs. Group B Twenty20 is a tough format to be consistent in but Namibia have made victory a habit, winning their sixth game in row to stay on top of Group B. Despite being restricted to 120 for 7, Namibia beat Oman by 36 runs in Sharjah. Their total was set up by the captain, Sarel Burger, who made 53 off 44 balls. The defence was headed by Christi Viljoen, who took 4 for 8 in 3.4 overs, and Burger, who claimed 3 for 14 to cap a terrific all-round performance. Oman were dismissed for 84 in 18.4 overs. A half-century by Richie Berrington helped Scotland ease to a seven-wicket win against Italy in Dubai. Italy were restricted to 136, thanks to a combined bowling effort. The Italy top order failed to convert their starts, with Gareth Berg top-scoring with 29. Majid Haq, the offspinner, finished with the best figures: 2 for 16 off four overs. Scotland lost Calum MacLeod early, but the stand of 76 between Berrington and Preston Mommsen put them on course for victory. Berrington's 67 contained six fours and three sixes. Scotland are currently third in Group B, and a win in their final group game, against United States of America, will guarantee them a place in the next round. United States of America slid to their fifth defeat in six games after they were demolished by nine wickets by Kenya in Abu Dhabi. The USA scorecard was littered with single-digit scores, with only their captain, Sushil Nadkarni, passing double figures. Nadkarni made 41 as opener and when he departed, USA were 73 for 6 in the 14th over. Ragheb Aga and and Nelson Odhiambo took three wickets each to dismiss USA in 18.2 overs. Kenya reached the target in ten overs, with Duncan Allan and Alex Obanda scoring 34 each. They will need to beat Uganda in their final group game, and hope other results go their way, to qualify for the next phase.

Bermuda wins against Papua New Guinea

Bermuda won its first match in dramatic fashion today at the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier when it beat Papua New Guinea (PNG) by five wickets. Janeiro Tucker hit three sixes in the last over and gave Bermuda the win with three balls remaining. The team did have some cloud around this silver lining as both Lionel Cann and Dion Stovell were disciplined by the ICC for dissent. PNG won the toss and elected to bat. They scored 155 runs, which required a run rate of 7.55 per over for Bermuda. Stovell again was masterful with the ball as he claimed two wickets for 21 runs in his four overs. Sammy Robinson also did well as he claimed two for 27, while Justin Pitcher was one for 35. Stovell and Fiqre Crockwell opened the batting for Bermuda forming a first wicket partnership of 39 and a solid run rate of 9.75. Stovell had 31 with Crockwell scoring 13 runs. Cann was third in and scored 15 runs, but it was the partnership of captain David Hemp (30) and Janeiro Tucker (52no) that helped position Bermuda for the victory. Their fourth wicket stand netted Bermuda 55 runs. It was then left for Tucker to play the hero by blasting three big sixes. The win moved Bermuda off the bottom of the points table past Denmark in Group A. The team has one Group match last against Hong Kong before a place game. Both Stovell and Cann received official reprimands for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during their side's 24-run loss against Nepal. The ICC reported Stovell and Cann both pleaded guilty to the Level 1 offence and accepted the proposed sanction by ICC Match Referee David Jukes. The pair was found to have breached Article 2 Section 2.1.3 of the ICC Code, which relates to "showing dissent at an umpire's decision during an International Match". Stovell and Cann were given out LBW in the fourth over of the match and were excessive in delaying their departure from the crease. This was considered a show of dissent, a fact accepted by both the players. As Stovell and Cann pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanction, there was no need for a formal hearing. The charge was bought by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Mark Hawthorne. Interestingly, Hawthorne was one of the referees for today’s match against PNG. Mr. Jukes said: “One can understand Messrs. Cann and Stovell's disappointment but they should make their way more promptly from the crease once they have been given out by the umpires and not linger so long in future. I hope this reprimand and warning will remind them both to always respect the umpires' decision.” All Level 1 breaches for this event carry a minimum penalty of a reprimand and/or the imposition of a fine up 50 per cent of the applicable match fee. As with other breaches at this level, the ICC Match Referee's decision is final and binding.
