4 days left Guyana likely to miss Caribbean T20

Guyana are unlikely to be able to field a team in the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament which starts next week following the Guyana government's decision to take over the running of the sport after disputed board election results. The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has been locked out of its offices since December 24 when the government created an interim body under Clive Lloyd after the country's chief justice challenged the election outcome. "We have tried our utmost to get the Government to acquiesce to the wishes of the players and the GCB, but to no avail," Anand Senasie, the GCB secretary, said in a letter to the West Indies Cricket Board on January 4. "I must regretfully inform you that the GCB cannot provide a team to participate in the tournament because the Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has placed locks on the doors of our offices and storage bond since December 24." The WICB has responded by asking the Guyana government to allow the board access to its facilities but has also put in place contingency plans should the tournament need to go ahead without Guyana. They will be replaced by a West Indies B team while Guyana's players who would have appeared in the competition, and don't get selected for the B side, will still be paid. "These actions are proposed in an effort to protect, as far as is reasonable, the best interest of the selected Guyanese players so that they are not adversely affected financially from possible non-participation in the Caribbean Twenty20," a WICB statement said. "The West Indies B Team will include players selected on the Guyana squad who have represented the West Indies or who are under consideration for future selection. The WICB is hopeful that this matter will be resolved in the best interest of the Guyanese cricketers, the fans of cricket in Guyana and the West Indies and the various stakeholders." Guyana are two-time winners of the Caribbean T20 tournament and the current situation could impact further cricket during the season with Guyana's place in the first-class competition also in doubt because they would require use of the state-owned National Stadium.

Guyana are set to take part in the Caribbean T20 tournament despite an ongoing dispute with the government over the administration of cricket in the country, which resulted in the offices of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) being locked. The WICB said the GCB had made progress in being able to field a team and that they had sought additional assistance from the West Indies board, which was provided to facilitate their participation. Guyana are scheduled to play Leeward Islands in Antigua on January 9, the opening day of the tournament. "The WICB is delighted that the GCB, against considerable odds, and despite the Government of Guyana's refusal to unlock its offices, has been able to make significant steps towards being able to provide the Guyana team," the West Indies board said. "The WICB felt compelled to offer its assistance to the GCB in the best interest of the Guyanese cricketers, the fans of cricket in Guyana and all stakeholders. "The WICB hopes there will be no further logistical and / or administrative hurdles placed before the GCB or the team to prevent the team's participation. The WICB restates its commitment to the process for ensuring that the management and governance of cricket in Guyana is strengthened and improved while reiterating that the authorised governing body for cricket in Guyana is the GCB." The GCB had its authority taken away by the Guyana government, which then appointed an interim management committee headed by former Guyana and West Indies captain Clive Lloyd. The standoff between the Guyanese government - represented by sports minister Dr Frank Anthony - and the GCB, and by extension the WICB, dates back to the disputed Guyana board elections in July 2011.

Champs Crash

Dwayne Bravo fought until the very end but his half century was not enough to save Trinidad and Tobago from an 11-run defeat to the Windward Islands in the opening match of the Caribbean Twenty20 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua yesterday. Bravo struck four sixes in his 42-ball 51 as T&T, under new captain Denesh Ramdin reached 118 for nine off their 20 overs after Man-of-the-Match Darren Sammy's 31-ball 41 led the Windward Islands to a competitive 129 for six as they won the toss and elected to bat first. When the Windwards took strike, Johnson Charles (34) and Miles Bascombe (13) put on 54 for the first wicket to give their side a solid platform. The 22-year old right-hander, Charles was the aggressor, slamming a six off pacer Ravi Rampaul in the third over before cutting off-spinner Sunil Narine for two boundaries in the last over of the PowerPlay to take the score to 42 without loss. Badree, who bowled a maiden over earlier, was struck for four by Charles but the spinner came back later in the over, trapping the opener lbw. The momentum then swung in T&T's favour during the tenth over as the Windwards lost Andre Fletcher (four) and Bascombe with Badree again in the mix. Fletcher, finding it difficult to get the ball away, faced seven deliveries before he was run out with the score on 59. Bascombe departed four balls later when he tried to go over the top and was caught by Sunil Narine inside the long on boundary. The Windwards' skipper then took up the mantle hitting two sixes and two fours to get his team to what turned out to be a winning total. When T&T batted, they were off a horrible start, losing opener Adrian Barath (one) in the second over of the chase. Lendl Simmons gave his team a chance, hitting 32 off 30 balls including three fours and a six but he could not maintain that momentum. The Windwards' bowlers kept things tight, bowling straight on a slow wicket and forcing T&T onto the backfoot. Denesh Ramdin's men were 42 for two off ten overs and started to lose wickets in heaps when they tried to accelerate the scoring rate. Simmons started the decline when he was caught by Bascombe off spinner Shane Shillingford in the 13th over with the score on 59. In the same over, Kieron Pollard, fresh off a hamstring injury, struck Shillingford for six off the second ball he faced, but was bowled off the next delivery leaving T&T with an uphill task to win the match. Dwayne Bravo kept the chase alive but wickets tumbled around him. T&T were 81 for five off 15 overs and it seemed like Bravo was the only person who could save them from defeat. The all-rounder struck four sixes and held out until the last over but with 30 runs needed in 12 balls, T&T would have needed something special from the 28-year-old. They did get a special effort, but with little support from the other end, it was not enough. Guyana took on hosts the Leeward Islands in the other match on the opening day at the same venue last night. T&T have today to regroup before taking on the Leewards in their second match at the same venue from 8 p.m. tomorrow.
