indiaregulator Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 I recently just re-read the Lord of the rings and The Simarillion and I've noticed how none of the characters seem to have a "happy ending". What happens to Frodo, Sam, Gimili, Legolas is pretty grim in itself but what happens to Elrond/Elrohir/Elladan/Arwen/Aragorn is just downright miserable and depressing. Then in the Simarillion the tale of Beren and Luthien is just as dark. Then I started recalling all the classical western novelists and their works and I realized that all of them are mildly depressing and dark at the minimum. Oscar Wilde - Dorian Gray. Dickens - Great expectations Victor Hugo - Les Miserables Dumas - Father and son - All of his works truth be told. CS Lewis - If I remember correctly from 6-7 years back don't the four kids get run over or something and die? And many others. Hell, even people like Dostoyevsky were brutally depressing. The question is, why?
