The mid-morning drama involving the Pakistan blind cricket team captain Zeeshan AbbasiÃÔ alleged ÅÑoisoning conspiracy turned out to be nothing serious in the end. The team, along with several others from all over the world, is here for the T20 World Cup for the Blind. Just before leaving for the ground for the match against Bangladesh, Abbasi is supposed to have sipped from a bottle of soap solution that was mistakenly kept on the breakfast table, among mineral water bottles, by a member of the housekeeping staff at the posh Movenpick Hotel. Though Abbasi, partially blind, is said to have felt uneasy, he went to the ground. But he felt sick again and was brought to MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, even as the match went on. After endoscopy tests, doctors said everything was normal, though he complained of throat irritation. ENT specialists were also consulted, and he was discharged in the evening. However, what is surprising is that the Pakistan team officials alleged that it was done deliberately and toilet cleaning acid was kept, despite the fact that Abbasi was brought out on a wheelchair. He even said: Å¢ll okay, I am fine, to the media. Pakistan team manager Bilal Satti said: Ç»eeshan had breakfast at about 7 am and drank from the bottle thinking it was water but we think it was cleaning acid. He started vomiting. He came to the ground but felt uneasy and was taken to the hospital. It is a mistake by the hotel staff and we hope the culprit will be identified. But we will stay on and hopefully win the World Cup. Later, in the evening, he told TV channels: ŵhe hotel has explained it to us and we will not pursue the matter further. Dr Naresh Shetty, president of MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, said in a statement: Å»eeshan is in no trouble whatsoever. He was brought into the hospital after having consumed a soap solution meant for cleaning purposes. We immediately did an endoscopy and found no traces of anything poisonous.
