In the aftermath of the Delhi gang-rape case, a panchayat in Bihar has banned mobile phones in schools

I am not going to ridicule this without even understanding which village, what circumstances they decided for this. Period. There might be some precedent which would have led them to belive so. I don't know, neither do you. But it is mob mentality to ridicule without even knowing anything.
This is what I am asking. What precedent do you imagine would lead them to believe that mobile phones lead to gang rape?

Many people are missing a point. Why was Delhi gang-rape the reason to ban mobile phones? The outcome seems positive(personally I think there is no connection between crime and mobile phones but lets assume that for a moment) but the thought process which led to the outcome seems to be flawed.

I don't know. I am not either justifying or opposing this move. I am against this propensity of ridiculing villagers without even knowing much about them or knowing details of the particular case.

We also don't know the reasoning behind people who believe there are pregnant pink unicorns floating in the sky, but that doesnt mean it shouldnt be ridiculed, at at the very least discussed. The most likely reason is that mobile phones leads to boys and girls talking to each other/ others outside the school and that somehow will lead to more rape. This is the comment he gave regarding the dress code.

Our children are wearing bhadkau [provocative] dress. We met the village head and told her to stop this. If the dress code is not implemented in rural areas, such incidents will definitely happen. It’s not like we are pressuring women. This is the need of the hour…”
The policy is not the problem. Mobile phones should be banned in school, the reasoning behind the policy is what is being criticized.

No mobile phones in schools and traditional uniforms - I don't see too much wrong here.
Students shouldnt have mobile phones in schools anyways and traditional uniforms should be encouraged. nothing wrong with this panchayat imo
Except this is a decision FORCED on the people by the panchayat. In a democracy nothing should be forced on someone. Since when do Panchayats decide school uniforms and rules? You see nothing wrong with an outside force influencing school rules? Next will they decide what subjects and contents students have to learn in school? What is this, Taliban rule? Of course you will not see anything wrong because you are the people least affected by this decision. But the day someone forces you what to wear and when to use a phone, you will realise the problem

Yes, and as long as this mentality remains in India, crime against women will continue to exist on a large scale. This curbing the rights of the victims and asking the victims (women) to change their lifestyles is the biggest problem with India. The Delhi rapists had exactly the same mentality because they had decided to "punish" the victim for being alone with a man at night. Their crime had nothing to do with sex or lust, they thought exactly liek thje panchayat guys and decided to punish the woman

Ya a school is allowed to force rules like not allowing cellphones or mandating dress codes inside the school premises. Don't see anything wrong with that part However if you read the article, the reasoning that they give behind the dress code is typical aplogist bullshyte about bhadkau dresses and how girls shouldnt wear jeans or carry mobile phones. These social attitudes have widespread acceptance, not only in rural india but in urban parts as well.

In villages, school administration is typically part of civic administration process. They are party to the decisions taken by Panchayats. Don't go by generic notion of Panchayats being run by thugs only. In many villages Panchayats run by people who are considered to be sensible, civil and respected by all villagers. Culture development in organic process. Forcing social norms or an ideology, whether right or wrong, from outside will lead to strife only.

What has this got to do with their comments on girls wearing bhadkau dresses like jeans? Till the society at large considers girls to be a party to the crime of rape because of provocative dressing, we will never be able to solve the problem. Might as well have given up trying to reform the caste system, sati, child marriage saying that cultural development cannot be forced from outside. If calling out this systemic bias leads to strife, then strife is far better than sitting back waiting for the status quo to change, because clearly that is not happening

Pray tell me what deeper discussion Amreekans or any of the other nations indulge in after a catastrophe.
That is the very first discussion that should happen perhaps. Should we look at American, or West for our solutions? A lot of the modern day phenomenon - Internet, Mobile technology, Facebook, Social media etc - were invented with the American society in mind, NOT India. Indians have done a fantastic job in adopting them for sure but that does not take away the question if we were prepared for it? For example, Facebook is often used as a tool to get laid in US. No big deal. Without Facebook Americans would have found some other way I suppose lol. However the whole concept was completely alien to Indians. Even though bulk of Indians use facebook for perhaps staying in touch etc there is a sizeable numbers of Indians looking to hook up. Is that Facebooks' fault? No? Not to stereotype but there used to be a time when Indians were infamous of overrunning most of the Internet chatrooms as well. Point is not to ding Indians, specially Indian male, anymore than he already has been in recent past, but to ask is there a big gap between what the modern day technology provides, and what we as a society are ready for? I think thats a very fair question.

That's quite a statement. Modern technology was developed on need/vision not on civilization or cultures. It is quite a stretch to say that Internet communication was required for the American society and not the Indian society!

That was not a statement Dex, merely an opinion :winky: That said do me a favor and do the following: a) Go to www.google.com b) Type MMS scandal in search c) See what pops up as top search results. Then tell me how cellphone camera technology has not been (mis)used by Indians. And also tell me if you honestly think that was the original intent for which that whole technology (cellphone camera) was designed.

MMS scandals go all around the world from India-Bangladesh to Brazil-Japan. Technology is for 'humans' not race/caste/creed.

Really? Thats your best answer on being shown how India dominates the world of MMS scandal. Maybe this denial is the reason why we are where we are today?

India dominates MMS scandals so technology is not designed for Indians! I would need Willie Wonka to trump that creativity. Americans used nuclear weapons to destroy Japan so nuclear weapons were not meant for the American society but for Japanese. Rapes happen in India so d!cks were meant for Americans and not Indians.
