Zap_Brannigan
Re: Test ODI averages yea if u look at his average. its totally true. Too bad there is no way too measure class and matchwinning abilties Now there is.... 1.Measure of class : Is he "god in offside" and rides on others in the team?A mere 40 is considered to be great from him cos the standards are too low for this batsman. If thats true, then he has class.Joins others such as Ganguly. 2.Measure of matchwinning ablities : Is the said batsman inconsistent and a good innings comes once in a blue moon? Is the said batsman comes low down the order and hence has more chances of "staying till the end" even if he scores only a 20? Is ur fav batsman so bad that the only thing u can show up for him are the aforementioned " matchwinning ablities".Inzi pretty much owns this category. Link to comment
Predator_05
Re: Test ODI averages Tests; 45-50 is good, 51+ is very good. Anything under 45 these days is just average, IMO. Adjusted for crap teams. In ODI's ? There are other factors which need to be considered; namely SR and the batting position. A batsman who averages 30, but scores a run a ball is just as useful as a batsman who averages 40 at a slower rate - ie; compare Jayasuriya to someone like Dravid. Ideally, you would like to have a top order in which the top 4 or 5 batsmen average at least 35 and score at at rate of over 75. A middle/lower order would preferably be comprised of batsmen averaging in the low 30's, but with SR's in excess of 90. Think Razzaq, Flintoff or Kemp. Link to comment
Rohan495
Re: Test ODI averages Look at all the sucess India has had in test match cricket Zap Brannigan. Laxman has scored in all the successful times of India test cricket for the decade hes been in Indian cricket, and even the matchwinning 100 in Lahore against Pakistan could be counted as one since it was such an important series that really brought India to prominence, its just unfortunate you say that. How does he ride on others, if he bats with the tail its the tail who are usually doing the slogging. If he has no real partnerships, which he hasnt had all series due to the out of form dravid and sehwag and jaffer and a once in a blue moon 50's, how do you expect him to win matches if he doesnt have support from his team. You really dont have a right to say anything bearing in mind he has the highest average out of anyone on the Indian team at 55.3. Sehwag: 7 innings and he still hasnt crossed double digits, still in the team Laxman: One duck, thats it Thats been the case always for Laxman, how can someone evolve into a consistent matchwinner if the team management has no faith in him. PS: Laxman is pure class i think he has the most potential out of anyone in the team in terms of matchwinning contributions. When he scores big his innings are usually efficient, if conditions are harsh like they have been when he scored 50 from 156 deliveries hes still managed, but can players like Sehwag manage? no Link to comment

How are standards low for him, hes expected to score 281 by most people, how are standards low, he scores a brisk 73 in the first test and no one gave him credit that he deserved where as Ganguly scores 50, and he gets the limelight, so i think your more lilkely refering to Ganguly more than Laxman. and his average is 43.04, which is improving even in such later of his career, and at one point in his career he averaged upto 48. Just accept the fact that Laxman is pure class. Link to comment
MundaPakistani
Re: Test ODI averages One must also look at the averages with in an average e.g people like Kallis and Yousuf have an inflated average because of their dominance against the minnows. Link to comment
Predator_05
Re: Test ODI averages Pure class he may be, but that average of 43 is mediocre - to put it mildly. and his average is 43.04' date=' which is improving even in such later of his career, and at one point in his career he averaged upto 48. [/quote'] aaah, so he was averaging as high as 48 by the end of the '04 Aussie tour - since then, during the course of the next two years; his average has slumped to 43. That's no improvement. It means he has actually regressed, if anything ? Link to comment

One of the reasons why his average isn't that great is because for a good chunk of his career he has batted at #6 and you will find that most batsman with a 50+ average bat at 3 or 4. Link to comment

Rohan495
Re: Test ODI averages it was 42 before the tour started, its gone up to 43 if he maintains good form it could upto 45 within no time. Link to comment
Zap_Brannigan
Re: Test ODI averages "for sure thats so true. hes always been the man whose been getting shuffled around all the time" Silly excuse.Sehwag never opened before gangs decided tht he didnt want competition for his spot and made him open...Now he is the top 3 opener from India of all time... Dravid started out at 6 too and never did he or any of us gave the stupid excuse like tht...Laxman has had chances at number 3,but been way too inconsistent at tht or any position,so tht went back to dravid. "Just accept the fact that Laxman is pure class." So is Sadagopan ramesh...Have u ever seen how he handled aktar? S.Waugh has the ugliest shots but he is one of the best batsmen..Class,if not transformed into performance is crap. Abt the batting positions, there has been players who has batted in lower positions in more games than laxman and yet score more than the pitiful 43 he does. I am not saying 43 is horrible, but its horrible when u take into context the way laxman shoots off his mouth at everything...whether being dropped from ODI or made to move batting positions.Better players like Dravid have gone thro this and are yet ready to take one for the team...43 in this decade is good for the 5th or 6th best batsman in the side..Nothing to write home about. yoda
Re: Test ODI averages Laxman's career would be deemed mediocre but for "the innings of the century". That innings alone propels him to the top echelon of Indian batsmen. It doesn't really matter what his career average is. It could be 281/"number of innings batted" for all I care. Link to comment

yoda
Re: Test ODI averages yea but he has the highest average on the team so far this series. so it doesnt matter what anyone has to say. With laxman, it is normally what he has scored in his very last innings, especially if he has failed in his recent outing. Most people will be desperately trying to forget his 74 at J'burg. Donno why, but that's the way it has been. Link to comment
Rohan495
Re: Test ODI averages yoda, completly agreed. This is the ultimate truth, Most Indian fans want to see end of Laxman, almost 90 percent of indian cricket fans. Its unfortunate that such a class player is ignored and treated casually by selectors and media. Link to comment
