India's Population Control Strategy

Circa 1947 the population stood at around 296 million. In 1975 it climbed to 600 million. Then dramatically it almost doubled , there are around 1.2 Billion Indians today. The standard replacement rate is considered 2.1 , I've read many studies that show the states of TN , Andhra and Kerala have below replacement rates, meaning population is not replacing itself though growing, unfortunately the growth rate in North India more than makes this up growing at around 3. From the outset it appears we have controlled it as the net Indian population growth rate is 1.31% compared to 1.8 next door, 2.72 for Afghanistan and a remarkable 1.2 for Bangladesh. Can India's population really eventually contract, are these stats even true? How would you solve the population problem, do we even have one or would we like to conveniently ignore it? Has the "Hum Do Hamara Do" mantra done anything? http://www.populstat.info/Asia/indiac.htm Look at the catastrophic falls in population 1860-61, 1875-81 mostly due to Famine. On a visit to Brazil where the birthrate has virtually fallen off of a cliff, I was told that female empowerment was the primary driver. Soap operas where women held powerful positions led many ordinary women to hold off on having babies and instead focus on their careers.
