Sachin was offered the crown of thorns — the captaincy — even before Dravid in 2005, which makes yesterday’s refusal his 3rd in 7 years THORN_CROWN711200782129.jpgNOT once, not twice, but thrice! Sachin Tendulkar, who declined to be India’s Test captain yesterday, was offered the job even before Rahul Dravid got it in 2005, then chairman of selectors Kiran More revealed to MiD DAY last night. More said he tried to convince SACHINCUT0711.jpg Tendulkar. “I spoke to him in a personal capacity before the meeting to appoint the captain in 2005. But he was reluctant,†More revealed. “Hence, I was surprised to read reports that he had agreed to take over the captaincy prior to his refusal this time. He has taken a mature decision, looking at the future of Indian cricket,†added More. Tendulkar’s first innings as captain spanned August 1996 to December 1997, while his second crack at the job was from August 1999 to March 2000. Rahul’s decision may have influenced Sachin Tendulkar’s latest refusal means an end to his captaincy career. Sources say that Sachin minutely studied the relationship between the current selection committee and Rahul Dravid, who quit as captain in September. It was discovered that both parties disagreed quite often, hence putting a question mark on the support Tendulkar would get as captain. “It’s very scary when you don’t get the support of the selection committee chief… it’s a big problem,†More observed. “The problem is compounded when the selector issues statements. Rahul did a wonderful job and I said then (when he resigned) that there was more to his quitting than just wanting to concentrate on his batting. “With Sachin’s decision, it is clear that he is not very happy with what is happening in the selection committee. Also, there is the senior-junior problem. The selectors’ stance and their policy should be clear,†said More. The other reason Tendulkar does not want the job, according to sources, is that he does not want to deal with the relentless media, one of his teammates said.
