An eye on Butterfingers

From cricinfo's week in review

Somehow England have managed to require three wicketkeepers in the past month and the first discard, Geraint Jones, has decided to spend the rest of his trip playing grade cricket with his old team in Brisbane. But he has not been trusted to take the gloves at Beenleigh-Logan, with Daniel Payne, the former Queensland player, to stay behind the stumps. Jones will play as a specialist batsman, obviously impressing the team's selectors with his Ashes form of 63 runs from six innings at 10.50.
Spectacular. Duncan Fletcher is capable of picking a man to be his nation's wicketkeeper when the same wooden gloved cretin cannot even be trusted with the gloves for a grade level club in Brisbane. :lmao:

It is the age-old debate if its acceptable if a keeper is outstanding with glovework while his batting may not be as good. Didnt Bob Taylor lose out to Alan Knott on his batting skills? Clearly Knott was fantastic behind the stumps(his records speak for themselves) but Bob Taylor was atleast as good, if not better. Indeed on pure keeping skills Taylor is mentioned ahead of Knott. Or in recent past Jack Russell lost out to Alec Stewart. Alec was a wonderful servant of England but Russell was an artist, rather suitably he would become a painter later on too. Back home Syed Kirmani made his debut a good 8-10 years after he started playing First class cricket, only due to a certain Brylcreem model Farokh Engineer. And towards the end Kirmani would lose out to the likes of More, again more on batting skill than anything else. Personally I prefer a quality keeper behind the stumps but in this era of Gilchrists, Sangakarra, Boucher, Dhoni it is imposibble to get a pure keeper like Don Tallon or KEith Andrews. Perhaps thats what Duncan Fletcher thought too and picked Geraint Jones ahead of Reed. I wouldnt have, but then again I wouldnt have picked Freddie the 'kipper too. xxxx
