just happened to saw it while googling.... Drug Possession Lalit Modi was charged and pleaded guilty to possession of 400 grams of cocaine, assault and kidnapping in 1985 while he was a student at Duke University, USA. He was sentenced to 2 years in prison, however he did not serve any prison time and came back to India in 1986 after being released on probation. In 2007 a PIL was filed in Mumbai High court challenging his position in BCCI on pretext of his criminal history. Though the court refused to unseat Modi, it asked the BCCI "to implement stringent regulatory measures so that those involved in criminal cases, not just illegal drugs but other serious charges have no place in administration".

Hahaha...Telling and quite astute in this case. Lalit Modi deserves lot more credit that he deserves. What exactly did he do? Make cricket big in India? Well cricket was already huge. Did he generate money for BCCI? Well BCCI was already super rich. Did he get the attention of world towards India? Well the world had already accepted India as the economic focus. Basically Lalit Modi used an already established fact and honed it further. Frankly had Lalit Modi not done it someone else could very well would have. You want original trailblazers, look no further than NKP Salve who had the galls to move cricket world cup away from Lords in 1987 at a time when the cricketing world was heavily Brit-Aus centric. Ever since then World cricket, and Indian cricket, has never been the same. xxx
