Gurasis Singh Dhesi, owner of a poultry farm in Pathankot, says " Antibiotics, like levofloxacin and enrofloxacin, are given to birds either as a preventive measure against diseases like e-coli and salmonella or to fight fungal and bacterial infections.These medicines don't remain in the birds for long. So if a bird is culled after a month of being administered any antibiotic, its effect on humans would be negligible." Dhesi, who has around 4.5 lakh birds, does admit that the artificial growth promoters (AGPs) given to increase the size of broiler chicken could be harmful to humans since they contain steroids, which stay in the birds' systems longer. :nervous: these type of news is worrying with demand of meat growing in India and no strong laws or enforcement agency to ensure quality of products, more and more short cuts likely to be taken by meat producers...already heard horror stories in China. More than antibiotics, it is the growth hormones laced with steroids injected in animals that worries me? Anyone have more info the side effects of consuming meat laced with antibiotics and traces of steroids?
