Fast bowler Gurinder Sandhu and wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Carters will be part of the Cricket Australia XI to take on New Zealand in a tour match in Sydney starting this Thursday. Ashton Turner will captain the side in the three-day match and due to its clashing with the opening Sheffield Shield round, the CA XI will be shorn of much of the talent that took on the New Zealanders at the weekend.

Whereas in Canberra the CA XI looked like a strong Australia A side, boasting Test hopefuls such as Usman Khawaja, Cameron Bancroft and Joe Burns, at Blacktown this week it will more resemble the CA XI that took part in the Matador Cup. Carters, Sandhu and Turner form the experienced core of the side, with the talented young New South Wales batsman Kurtis Patterson also included.

There will also be several men who played for the CA XI in the one-day competition, including Hilton Cartwright, Matthew Short and Mitch Swepson. The match will be New Zealand's final warm-up game ahead of the first Test at the Gabba, and CA's national talent manager Greg Chappell said the three-day fixture would be a good opportunity for some of Australia's young talent.

"New Zealand has been one of the most successful international teams in recent years so it will be a great experience for this CA XI, which includes some of the most exciting young cricketers in the country," Chappell said. "This will be a great leadership opportunity for Ashton Turner. He has performed admirably when captaining at this level in recent years and this will allow him to build on that experience.

"West Australian all-rounder Hilton Cartwright was particularly impressive with the bat during the recent Matador BBQs One-Day Cup. He was unlucky to miss out on his maiden List A century against Queensland, but he definitely held his own against formidable opposition.

"We have been very pleased with Gurinder Sandhu's progress over the last 12 months. His consistent performances earned him his international debut and he performed well under pressure on the big stage. He was also impressive for Australia A in tough conditions in India earlier this year and also showed his diversity of skills with the introduction of his spin bowling."

    This kind of shows a dearth of talent/experience in Australian cricket at the moment. Even with all of its Test players playing in the Shield game, there are only 3-4 guys who have any First Class experience of note who haven't been picked by their states. It's true that Australia just lost 5 Test players to retirement recently, but usually you'd have the guys forced out of the state side by the Test players coming back, who are able to play against the touring side. Looks like the Shield season will have a bunch of new faces trying to fill the gaps by the Test players instead. Certainly doesn't seem to be that many backup state players ready to go - which may be the reason for the CAXI experiment(s) this year, trying to build some depth.

    These selections must still have a semblance of merit. Matthew Short must be related to Greg as his numbers at grade level and above are abysmal and have been for many years. There must be others that deserve a fair go? Picking winners and having favourites is bad management and ultimately damaging to the player you are trying to develop.

    @ JohnTheKiwi: I agree that NZ has very few selection issues to worry about. One, maybe two spots at most. We are the exact opposite. We have about 6 spots nailed down but the other 5 are up in the air even at this late stage. This is the most disorganised I've seen us since the mid 80's and NZ might never get a better chance to kick us while we're down. NZ has a strong, stable team that's been through a few campaigns together and seem to have bonded well. We don't even know who's going to be in our team. .. Still, I'm sure we'll try our best. ps. NZ/Aus have a play date next Sunday at Twickenham. Go the Wallabies!!

    Damn-how many guys named 'Mitch' does Australia have kicking around the upper echelon of cricket? I suspect the only intrigue over the NZ side for the first test will be who gets the nod between Bracewell and Henry as the third seamer. I've worn out my constant demand for Milne diatribe and am just going to assume he no longer plays and move on. Failing to utilize him at the Gabba and WACA for fear of him breaking down is like leaving a Ferrari in the garage every day for fear of an accident. There. I am done with that. I see a lot of claptrap about not playing MJ and MS in the side at the same time because they bowl too loosely and in short spells making the third seamer overwork. You do realize there is another Mitch right? As far as fourth seamers go he is phenomenal. Moreover, if Oz are going into this test believing they need a "containment policy" to win, as opposed to a "knock 'em over" policy then Australia has sure changed a lot since I was last down there. Oh and kia kaha ABs

    @CGKK, if you replace "bowling attack" with "Southee and Boult" the rest are massively unproven. But hey... who needs fact?

    And this Australian X1 is supposed to give the Blacks Caps a decent warm up game? I hope the Australians don't bat first....this is a team of boys against a class bowling attack...the only practice the kiwis will get is slips catching and replaceing the bails.
