Subhash Gupte was, by far, India's best ever spinner although his stats do not reflect this. He bowled with many limitations (i) some excellent batting lineups (see the WI averages of that era), (ii) generally unhelpful pitches and bad time to be a spinner, and (iii) played for a very weak time.

 

In fact, under the right conditions, I believe that India's best spin trio was Mankad, Gupte and Ahmed, followed by the much-better known Bedi, Pras and Chandra.

 

As for Ashwin, he is not as good as peak-Bhajji.
