Why should that matter? We have more men players in top 50 than any other country including the erstwhile superpower China. In terms of medals and achievements Sindhu and Saina are the best 1-2 from any single country since the 2012 period when China had Li Xuerui and Wang Yihan as their top 2.  Our players are medal contenders in every single tournament they step into, if this is not our golden age then what is?

Before these 2 girls, we never had any top female player to speak of. Among men we had Gopi who won the All England once but wasn't successful in the superseries', let alone Olympics and World Championships. Padukone is by popular opinion our greatest male player of all time but if you look closer at his achievements, there is one big question mark. Chinese players weren't allowed by their government to play in any sport, that is true for Olympics also, China didn't participate between 1956 to 1980. Padukone had to deal with only Danes and Indonesians who were very good. But when China returned to participate they obliterated the field and showed who's who. Modern day Indian players have to deal with the Chinese day in and day out, Srikanth's China open win over Lin Dan, the GOAT of badminton alone is a greater achievement than what Indian badminton combined achieved before the mid 2000s.

great post. and also regd the physical demands of badminton. having played it a little in my "youth", I recall how demanding it was quite well.
