fineleg Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Do a search and you will find many contradictory reports. Do any of you have Vonage/Voice-over-IP phones in India? Whats the actual situation?
fineleg Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 I know many who use it for calls to/from USA to India. So, it "works" technically, but is it illegal...do people face issues becos of this?
THX_1138 Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 I use it. call my mum and dad in india (they have a dedicated line, a US number and it costs me 14 bucks a month for it, but as an adavantage, they can call me as much as they want, and my aunt, who also happens to be on vonage). so yeah go for it.
THX_1138 Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 no its not illegal to the best of my knowledge since my brother requested airtell, his ISP and they said it was ok.

For the 14 bucks plan, they can call you for 500 mins right (not unlimited "as much as they want" like you described)? You can call unlimited from US.

You can call unlimited from US. i have a vonage number too... vonage to vonage is unlimited. vonage to another line is 500 minutes outgoing for the 14 buck plan. and unlimited incoming. and since me, my mum, and my aunt all have vonage (me and my aunt are in the us whereas my mum is in india), we are able to talk to each other indefinately. incredibly, if you are in europe, and you buy your parents an american vonage connection, on the 24 dollar a month plan they can call any number in western europe indefinitely without any additional charge. vonage has free international long distance to about 40 countries (list available on their site).
THX_1138 Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 no problem mate... but let me warn you... VOIP connection to home might be a mixed bag of sorts. while i am able to talk to my brother and my gf indefinately, i am unable to avoid the every two hour inquiry about what i ate, am i wearing adequate woolens etc etc.
