Desi Cartman Posted April 6, 2008 Author Posted April 6, 2008 9-yr-old battered at ‘model’ thana Chandigarh: A nine-year-old orphaned child was beaten up with such sadism that when he entered court on Saturday, those present for various cases — judges, lawyers, and even thieves and petty criminals — fell into a stunned silence on seeing his condition. Worse, this allegedly happened at a police station that has been proclaiming its ‘ISO 9001:2000 status’, a certification that it is following ‘‘highest international standards’’ of practices and functioning. Ravi (name changed), hobbled into the courtroom clutching his stomach. His arm appeared broken, his heel was blue with repeated lathi blows and he was swaying from the pain ravaging his frail body. When a lawyer tried to lift him up, the boy shrieked, making the packed courtroom gasp in horror. The boy’s offence: he tried to steal Rs 300 from a man on Friday night. He needed the money to go to his grandmother in Chhapra (Bihar). His mother had abandoned him in his sleep a few days back and his father is dead. Punjab cops deny assaulting kid Chandigarh: Policemen on Saturday brutally beat up a nine-year-old for stealing a paltry Rs 300. ‘‘They (the cops) took him to the police station at Sector 34 where he was punched, kicked, slapped and struck with lathis,’’ said advocate T S Sudan, a human rights activist who has taken up Ravi’s case. ‘‘Perhaps they have cracked a few of his ribs, too.’’ Acting promptly, additional chief judicial magistrate J S Bhinder, in whose court Ravi was brought in, and who, incidentally, also heads the city’s Juvenile Justice Board, directed his staff to take the boy to his chamber where he was fed cookies and wafers. He has also called for the child’s medical report. The police, on their part, denied assaulting Ravi. Although investigating officer Harminder Singh agreed Ravi had been taken to the thana for fingerprinting, he said the police would never do such a ‘‘shameful’’ thing. ‘‘The people who caught him must have thrashed him,’’ the cop said, adding that the boy already has four theft cases against him. Under the Juvenile Justice Act, a child below 18, if caught for an offence, should be immediately produced before the Juvenile Justice Board which will decide if he is to be given a bail or sent to a juvenile home. No policemen is allowed to touch him, put him in lock-up or send him to jail.
Desi Cartman Posted April 12, 2008 Author Posted April 12, 2008 Minor raped by three cops in Ludhiana LUDHIANA: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three police persons in a park in posh Civil Lines area in the district, police said on Saturday. The policemen were arrested on Saturday morning and suspended with immediate effect, DIG police, Ludhiana range Ishwar Singh said. They have been identified as Assistant Sub-inspector Inderjit Singh and two class IV employees Hari Om and Gurmail Singh. The incident took place on Friday night when the girl, hailing from Lucknow, went to meet her friend in the park just behind the Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner's residence, they said. According to an FIR registered in the civil lines police station, she was overpowered by three policemen deployed there on PCR duty and taken to a corner in the park. They forcibly took away the boy accompanying her, gagged him and allegedly raped the girl, the report said. When an alarm was raised, the policemen managed to escape from the scene, while the girl was escorted to the DC's residence by the people. Desi Cartman Posted April 12, 2008 Author Posted April 12, 2008 Girl in love killed, cremated secretly HOSHIARPUR: Ravinder Kaur, just 18 and in love with Amritpal, hardly got any chance to be with the man she wanted to marry. On Wednesday, when her family left home to attend a neighbour's wedding, she sneaked out and went to meet her 25-year-old lover. But someone spotted her with Amritpal and the word spread like wildfire in Darga Haeri village, 35 km away from Hoshiarpur. Soon, seething at seeing their Saini girl with a scheduled caste man, Ravinder was dragged home by her relatives and beaten unconscious. The next day, police sources said, she was "consigned to flames", yet another casualty in Punjab's bloody history of honour killings. SSP, Hoshiarpur, Sukhchain Singh Gill told the Times of India on Friday that "the body of the deceased had been cremated before the matter came to the notice of the police". He added, "There were only ashes from the pyre." A case has been registered under sections 302 (murder), 201 and 120B of IPC at the Tanda police station and police said they were verifying if Ravinder was beaten to death or forced to commit suicide. The girl's parents, Baljit Kaur and Manohar Singh, are behind bars.
