Panaji Police have registered a case after they received the communication from Delhi Police, with whom the woman has filed the complaint. Police stated that the incident occurred on March 7 in a five star hotel where she was dragged into a room from a stairway and raped by an unknown person. The incident was reported to Delhi Police on March 17. The New York-based woman, who did not file a case in Goa, went to Delhi and filed a complaint there. Officials confirmed that the Delhi Police have conducted medical examination on the woman, who was in Goa on a vacation. Panaji Police confirming the receipt of complaint said that they will call the victim to Goa as she is required for a medical examination Link why would they need her in GOA for the tests ? I am wondering if the number of rape cases has increased in India or is it just that more victims are reporting it now ?

The kind of sexual violence that is prevalent in India is symptomatic of a culture that has lost the pulse on basic human nature and how to deal with sexuality. One of the few aspects where India can learn a LOT from the west.

Desi Cartman Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 delhi times In an incident which brought back memories of the infamous 2005 Dhaula Kuan rape case, three young men lured a 12-year-old girl into a car and gangraped her inside the vehicle at a secluded spot in the neighbourhood on Wednesday night. The assault took place at Khayala near Tilak Nagar in west Delhi. The Maruti car in which the rape allegedly took place had dark film on its windows which provided cover for the act, police said. The main accused, Rajiv Porwal (23), and two of his accomplices in the car — Manmohan alias Manu (20) and Rakesh alias Raj (21) — have been detained. The girl knew the alleged rapists well as they all lived in Khayala. According to the police, on Wednesday evening, Rajiv —who owns a grocery shop in the area — offered to take the girl for a joyride in his car. He was accompanied by his friends, Manmohan and Rakesh. "When the girl did not return till late evening, her parents got worried. The girl ultimately returned late at night and told her elder sister about being repeatedly sexually assaulted inside the car. The sister then informed their mother," said Sharad Aggarwal, DCP (West). The girl was taken for a medical check-up at the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital on Thursday. "We have detained all the accused. Porwal has confessed to the crime and the initial doctor's report has also confirmed the rape. However, we are awaiting the final medical report," Aggarwal told TOI. Police said a case of rape has been registered at the Tilak Nagar police station on the basis of the complaint made by the girl's mother. The accused is absconding. "Seventeen years old Anita (name changed), a resident of Bamanpur, was set on fire by a youth for resisting rape attempt. She is battling for life in the Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital with 60 per cent burns," the police said on Thursday. According to reports, the incident took place at around 12.30 pm when the accused, identified as Shrawan Kumar of the same village, barged into the girl's room while she was changing after returning from Kabir Public School where she studies in class XI. When she protested, the accused threatened her with dire consequences. He later doused her with kerosene and set her on fire, a police official told TOI. At the time of incident, the girl was all alone in the house. The Ekdil police have registered a case under section 307 of IPC and SC/ST Act. However, the accused is absconding. IMO...this crime against women is more prevalent among the lower strata of society..mainly among Jhuggis and lower middle to middle class.... and main culprits among rapists are either neighbours...relatives...or drunk drivers or drunk young goondas..

India's extraordinarily high sex-violence is a problem symptomatic of a repressed culture that is neither repressed too much (like say Saudi Arabia) and nor does it have many individuals who are confident and open about their sexuality. Sad state of affairs for a nation that once upon a time was as/more sexually liberal as the western world. But then again, ignorance knows no bounds i suppose. That the prevalent Indian culture's views on sexuality is completely warped and destructive is true without a shadow of doubt. Yet again, another area where the westerners have left us in their dust.

But residents of a Dhanbad village" clearly did not think that should be the case. A middle-aged widow from a backward community was paraded naked on the streets in Ranwatand village, 35 km from here, on Thursday because she had entered the village temple. Kalawati was meted out the punishment as the villagers felt "a widow has no right to enter a temple". She had also reportedly put vermilion on her forehead too, which was objected by village women. The villagers held a "people's court" and decided to punish her. The widow has named Jagannath Mahto, Sukhdeo Mahto, Sukar Mahto, Kailash Mahto, Bhola Mahto in the FIR and said they alongwith about 200 people prevented her from entering the temple, stripped her, put shoes around her neck and paraded her on village streets. They were shouting slogans alleging she practised witchcraft and was responsible for the outbreak of chicken pox in the village. The villagers alleged that Kalawati's "black magic" caused the death of a woman last week. Kalawati alleged some people in the mob also tried to force-feed human excreta to her. They did not succeed in their attempt, though. No one has been arrested so far. Kalawati, widow of Narayan Kumhar, used to visit the Kali temple regularly, which was opposed by the village women. They also gheraoed Hariharpur police station, where the widow later filed an FIR against the accused, and also gheraoed Vinod Murmu, the O-C of the police station, who had gone to investigate the case on Friday. The accused had been directed to appear before the police, but none of them turned up. Instead, the women marched to the police station and demonstrated against the FIR. The O-C said action would be taken against the villagers.

The girl, Gwendolyn Naronha, a second year B Com student of Bandra's St Andrew's college, belongs to Valsad district in Gujarat. She fell in love with her schoolmate Vivek Patel three years ago. Patel, now a first year student of Bachelor in Management Studies at Hinduja College, has been staying as a paying guest in Mumbai for the last one year. After Gwendolyn secured admission in the Bandra college, her parents shifted from Valsad to Malad. "On March 28, after writing his first paper in environmental management, Patel along with a friend, Jitesh Gorasia (18), went to a hotel and later came to Kennedy Bridge. There Patel saw a youth opening a bottle and advancing menacingly towards him. Both Patel and Gorasia panicked and tried to escape. But the youth chased the duo and later threw acid on them before fleeing. The victims were later rushed to Bhatia hospital with burn injuries,'' said joint commissioner of police (crime) Rakesh Maria. "But when Gwendolyn came to pay a visit to Patel in the hospital, we decided to question her and get some leads,'' an officer said. Crime branch unit-II officials then interrogated Gwendolyn, who managed to mislead them by feigning ignorance about the incident. "But we came to know of the truth after we arrested two teenagers, Saby Abraham (19) and Keyur Jagdish Parmar (19), for their involvement in the case,'' Maria said. "Saby told us that Gwendolyn had specifically asked him to break Patel's hands and legs and not to kill him. As Saby knew Patel, he passed on the supari to Parmar. While Parmar is pursuing an information technology course in Ahmedabad, Saby is a Std XII dropout from Valsad,'' Maria said, adding that Saby had a crush on Gwendolyn. "The girl later gave Rs 600 as initial payment to the duo, who spent Rs 150 from it to buy acid from N K Traders in Valsad, Rs 200 to buy a SIM card and the remaining amount as transportation charges,'' said sources. "After the attack, the girl met the accused near Government Law College and paid them Rs 4,500 in cash. The girl had told Saby that Patel had raped her during Navratri in 2006 while she was in Valsad. But she kept quiet as she was in love with him. But she got enraged after hearing that Patel's parents had disapproved their relationship. In order to take revenge, she decide to retaliate,'' said an officer. The apex court was firm that ridiculing a wife by calling her "black" amounted to severe mental torture. It rejected the husband's plea that mere remarks about his spouse's complexion could not be taken into consideration as they did not amount to mental torture and that therefore, the conclusion that this drove her to commit suicide was erroneous. The court said derogatory and contemptuous remarks about a woman's dark complexion, which could be worse than physical torture for a sensitive person, caused enough mental trauma to drive the accused's wife to take the extreme step. The order from a Bench comprising Justices Altamas Kabir and J M Panchal for the first time marks a new sensitivity towards a form of discrimination that has been so common that it is not even considered as out of the ordinary. While the court and legislature have acted against caste-based and, lately against gender-based prejudices, the colour handicap had not engaged its attention so far. In the facts of the case, Syed Fathima, within two months of her marriage to Farook Batcha in August 1999, got so distressed with the constant quarrels in her matrimonial home because of her dark complexion that she finally decided to end her life by pouring kerosene and setting herself on fire. In her dying declaration, she said that since her complexion was dark, her husband did not like her and there were frequent quarrels. A day after giving the statement, she died in hospital. A Madurai sessions court as well as Madras High Court found the husband guilty under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (cruelty to women in matrimonial home) and sentenced him to two years imprisonment.
