The Pakistan Cricket Board will launch a new look Twenty20 domestic tournament next year on the lines of the Indian Premier League, offering franchises of city-based teams to sponsors and companies. A senior official of the board said that this year's Twenty20 competition, which has been delayed until August 10, would be the last time that the popular domestic event would be held on regional basis and without team sponsors. "From next year, we will offer franchise of teams like in the IPL to interested companies and individuals and work has already begun in this direction," the official said. * T20 or Tests: Why choose? He said the Twenty20 national championship would also be expanded to possibly include foreign players. "But that will definitely depend on the sort of money the companies and individuals buying the franchise of teams are willing to offer for overseas players," the official said. He said the board, however, has decided to have a mandatory rule that every city team would have at least four under-19 players in their playing eleven in a bid to promote new talent and give them exposure alongside established players. * IPL: Schedule | Match reports & Scorecards He said PCB's marketing department has already started the groundwork for a Pakistan Premier League but everything would depend on the response from sponsors and companies. The official said the board would offer exclusive television rights of the Twenty20 event in its package of international television rights which would be up for bidding this year. "The fact is that Twenty20 leagues are now a popular form of cricket and we don't want to lag behind other countries in this regard," he said.

They are unable to convince the boards to visit them for series' at present. Wonder how PCB is going to get the overseas players to live in Pakistan for over a month? Again the IPL is a success because India has massive audience and the TV channels world over hurried to buy the rights. Wonder where PCB is going to get that kind of audience? I think tourney like IPL can only work in England and Australia apart from India. England to be able to host again has to depend on money from Indian sponsors. Indian sponsors obviously prefer IPL than say EPL. Australia can host an IPL like tourney given the primary summer sports is cricket and there is good following of the sport. Hardly 10% of the poms follow cricket in England anyways.

Is PCB serious ? Starting a league & all is great, but where does the $$$ come from. PCB is on the verge of bankruptcy & is dependent on the upcoming Ind-Pak series later this year to replenish its coffers. Lahore electricity board doesnt seem to have the money to light up a friggin stadium (ask the Bangladeshis). Islamabad never had the money to run a government. And these buffoons want to copy their neighbours within a fortnight, Hullo ? I guess PCB, if lucky, will end up selling franchises to the makers of Roohafsa, marijuana & AK-47s. Players will get 20 lashes for a turnout & the winners will have their butt tattooed. If anyone thought BCCI were the ultimate megalomaniacs, think again! PCB will do well to ensure cricket as a game survives in Pakistan. Dreams of prosperity come after survival.

Well Every Country Starting their own T20 Leagues May spell Doom for the One Day and Test Formats as the time factor has to be seen................... :omg:Say 5 countries having a T20 league spanning over 6 weeks (like the IPL) each would mean 30 weeks out of the 52 in an year.............. Leaving just 22 weeks for both test and one dayers................ Nervous Days are Ahead for cricket...............:omg:

What PCB foremost needs is a good domestic structure. Gone are the day they used to pick players from the streets. A winning team attracts good revenues and vice versa. Pakistan is on the verge of heading to cricket disaster. They need to start building a good team that can win enough.

Only Australia, not even England. For English fans, serious cricket only means the Ashes. Everything else is preparation for Ashes. They are happy winning the Ashes once in every two decades. They are the ones who coined the phrase 'pyjama cricket' for ODIs. T20 will never be such a big a hit there. PCB? Is this a joke? They cant even do it in the next half century. India can do it because of the financial powers and huge fan following. PCB has none of it and to top it all, every international player seems scared of the place where a bomb goes off every now and then.

At the advent of ICL and IPL, no other league can flourish atleast in Asia...today PCB, tomorrow SCB, day after BCA...if every country begin up with the plans of leagues, they will end up with A-class and B-class clubs. This is for sure...how many more players will remain in the international arena to sign with these newly forming leagues ??? will they compel each of the Boards to supply ODI and T20 caps on whole-sale basis for their players, then what will be scenario? A player will play just an ODI or a T20 match for the country and straight away sign contract with some league and fly away. What will be the fate of these countries at the international cricketing level??? Its just horrible to imagine. I have a strong opinion that ICL must prevail as it never auctioned the players and has prestigious names to its league both in players and management. It also has the brand with them " Indian Cricket League ". On the other hand, BCCI cannot withstand for long on the basis of finances, its brand name IPL seems more like a soccer league. Its greatest mistake which is irreversible is that they auctioned world class players amongst the participating teams at discriminating prices. Where the heck self respect gone for the players like Ponting, etc. On the other hand, its earning policies are also purely commercial and not in the interest of cricket.

I'd prefer All the cricketing nations in asia joining to gether for 1 league instead of all the nations having a league of their own............................ Will be good for the game all over the continent.................... It will also allow enough time to promote the longer versions of the game......................

Guest Hiten.

All the Kenyan/Zimbabwean/Bangladeshi/Irish/Scottish et al are all excited with this news. Infact, they have started packing their bags and applied for Pakistani Visa because they are damn sure that other than them no one will be 'auctioned' or show an interest in PP HELL. On the other hand, big business magnets such as Raza calling card, Rooh Afza sharbat have shown interests in claiming a city based franchise.
