When it comes to selecting national teams for ODIs, national selectors of different boards are taking opposing views on weather to take IPL performances of their respective players into consideration or not.

  • Pakistan board has taken the position not to take IPL performances into consideration. Pakistan team for tri-nation series in Bangladesh
Pakistan selectors will not consider IPL performances while naming the squad for the triangular series in Bangladesh, according to the chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed.
  • Indian selectors are divided on the issue while board says "No directive on team selection" Indian selectors to meet on May 30 to pick tri-series squad Shah
"We will be there [at the IPL] for the last two league games in addition to the semi-finals and finals", said Bhupinder Singh, a national selector. He didn't rule out the possibility of taking into account some of the top Indian performers in the IPL. "Definitely, anybody who will be doing well might find a place." However, not all the selectors believe IPL form matters in national selection. Sanjay Jagdale, the Central Zone selector, said IPL performances would not be taken into consideration because India already have a stable one-day squad.
  • On the other hand South Africa is awarding new contracts based on IPL performances. CSA offers contract to IPL hit Morkel
Lauding Albie Morkel's 'stand-out' performance in the Indian Premier League, Cricket South Africa has handed the lanky all-rounder a national contract that takes effect from next month. Morkel joins fellow all-rounder Robin Peterson and batsman Neil McKenzie as the three new players awarded contracts by the national cricket body. "His record earned him a contract with the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League and he has been a stand-out player in getting them through to the semi-finals," Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola said in a statement.
  • Sehwag has jumped into the mix by demanding that IPL performncea should be taken into account. IPL performances should count for national selection - Sehwag
"IPL performances should matter. Everyone is watching it," he said. "I think the selectors should take IPL performances into account when they select the Indian squad."

If other boards decide not to consider IPL performances that can be understood as they have few players in IPL mix and even of those most are already part of national squads with the exception of Aussies. For Indian selectors there are so many young players playing in IPL. Many of these players wouldn't have gotton an oppurtunity to impress selectors without IPL. Any blind disregard of IPL performances will be plain stupid.

ipl performances backed with domestic performances should be considered dhawan, yusuf pathan & badrinath have domestic performances to show as well goni, dinda, asnodkar(his team was in plate group & should look to join a elite team next season) happen to be a bit raw and would need 1 season of domestic cricket

A Twenty20 is a very different format to 50 overs and I don't reckon the selectors should be handing out places to IPL batting stars. A fantastic ODI batsman can excel in a 20 over game and not the other way around IMO. It's lot easier to score runs quickly in a Twenty20 format than 50 overs. On the other hand I'd back a bowler that has done well in IPL to do well in ODIs particularly when the economy is concerned. You can hand pick some of the bowlers that has done well in Twenty20s and play them in ODIs. It's very tough for the bowlers to bowl well consistently in Twenty20s. If a bowler has done well in Twenty20s he will invariably do well in ODIs.
